Do I need to recondition the lenses from Ebay?

Hi guys,

I am new, third post only(I think?). I finally got the lenses I bought from Ebay. Just a few questions...

I realised Jupiter 12 can be screw forward. Meaning the rear element actually moved towards the front and the front part(with aperture ring) moved forward protruding out. So do I use this lens with the front part protruding out or all the way back in? Also the rear element can be screw out, like depart from the main body, is that normal?

My Jupiter 9(85mm) has got fungus, can I dismantled it myself to clean? How? I also notice a bubble also in the middle of the lens, is it removable and it is normal? I also managed to screw out the lens into to 2 parts, normal? There is quite a few scratches on the front element, possible to remove?

Lastly, I also have Jupiter 3 and 11, condition is ok(not tested), do I need to recondition all my lenses so they are good sharp lens? how?

Thanks

No need to recondition? But there's fungus...... Help anyone? :(

Bubbles are normal in lenses of the era- considered by some to be a mark of some quality (and won't affect pictures)

If there's fungus, remove it as quickly as you can- as it causes picture degredation and might etch the glass.

Anything I buy from e-Bay, I consider it part of the cost of doing business to have it CLA'd, period. I gave up all hope of ever buying something that wasn't out of adjustment on the 'Bay a while ago.

I don't really know what you mean with the first part of your question about the J-12; but it is normal that the rear element can be screwed out - just srew it in as far as possible!

About the J-9: yes, the fungus has to be cleaned out as soon as possible; for me a solution of vinegaric acid or white vinegar worked well for cleaning off fungus.
Look here http://www.beststuff.com/forum/list.php?f=27 or search the archives here http://www.beststuff.com/forum/list.php?f=21 on how to take apart the J-9 - I haven't tried it myself, but it is supposed to be a bit tricky, because it is easy to misthread the focussing helix when putting the J-9 together again...

HI Roman,

The j12 I got , you can actually turn the rear element make it move inward and making the front element protrude out from main body.

You know what, I got my turret universal viewfinder, the grid line in the finder is slanted! Possible adjust or find tune it back?

Thanks for the link, will try if I dare :D

If I have understand, the better thing to do with your J-12 :
-Look in front of it , I mean the front lens in front of you. There are two bayonet screws : one internal that tightens the front lens and one external that tightens the whole lens mount. Take a tool that will take the external bayonet, hand made, or other, then screw the whole lens mount in order to get it back as far as possible in the body, but DON'T OVERTIGHTEN ! Then, keep your tool on the bayonet and re-screw the rear element in a normal way.
Now your lens is in the good position.
Ask me if problem.
Bye

No advices for the J-9 as it's more complicated to dismount, and I'm not good enough in english to explain how to...

If you want to dismount the J-12 in LTM mount, follow this procedure (you did not tell us if it was contax mount or LTM...) but to remove the lenses it is the same way...*
Unscrew the rear lens and remove it.
Unscrew the front external bayonet
Then you got the front lenses and the aperture system. Unscrew the front lens from aperture.
Done, now you can clean them...
