I just created a symbolic link to services from rffgallery. Now the image whows if you clickon the old links.

i m no programmer, but only difference is we have 'services' instead of 'rffgallery' and a additional 'med_' on the new url, is there a way to make it like old url?

"Random pictures from the gallery"

Nice to see a fresh rotation of images now on the RFF Homepage and new ones loaded upon refresh.

Ah, that's great news. When I loaded the site today I still had the non-random "random images" cached, so didn't notice any difference. Saw this, went back, and sure enough: fresh photos.

Long overdue and much welcomed, to say the least!

As one of the photographers who benefited from Jorge’s HOF picks model, I admit that I came to cringe at seeing a small subset of images being labeled as random, but appearing increasingly like a little gated community designed to keep other folks out.

‘Randomization’ does not live at the same address as ‘selection.’ As it stands, the header is misleading. Deleting the modifier “Random” would at least decrease the misunderstanding of Jorge’s laudable curatorial intent.

But also, his HOF selection model needs to measurably increase the number of selections that can be randomized, and aim for greater stylistic/esthetic diversity (e.g. color, landscape, street grabs).

Imagine if the weekly Gallery Picks and the Best of Gallery Picks threads were somehow incorporated into this banner. Maybe more RFF photographers would contribute to the gallery then, and contribute critically to the Gallery Picks.

Cheers for updating this. Now it is a much better photographic site experience and makes me want refresh the page much more often :)

Good idea.

A software glitch: I clicked on a Random pictures from the gallery section on the front page and got an error message saying the image wasn't there.

OMG, finally fixed!

Now on to all the other issues that were mentioned months ago. Will those be fixed too? One can hope.

It happened me too, but I found I need to double click to open the photo

Unless someone is going to curate the images to eliminate the clunkers, I would just as soon not have random pictures from the gallery shown on the landing page.

I voted yes. So yes, most definitely.

The images form an attractive 'opener' when I log into RFF. I always enjoy the selection, even if I too agree it should be changed more often.

And agreed, we are a photo web site, so images are the way.

Also, the new changes have improved things dramatically. Many thanks!!

Wow, what a brilliant idea from brilliant minds demanding curated random pics on the home page.

Since its so important to you,
Naturally you are volunteering
your time for free to curate hundreds of thousands of RFF pics, right?

While I would agree it would be better (although impractical) if the data base was curated, IMHO the way the home page is currently randomized works far better than before. The HOF pics seemed to amount to some 50 photographs that were cycling through. It got boring after awhile seeing the same pics all the time. The weird thing is that now quite often several pics show up from the same photographer on the same page.

So at this point is it really completely random cycling through ~250k photographs in the entire database?

I want to say that after many months with the "random" implementation in the new landing page, I have come across with some excellent pictures that I could never find in the old site (as I rarely browsed the gallery with enough rigor). I also came to know people that do not generally participate in the forum, but their pictures are describing their views better than words. Indeed many times you see pictures from the same photographer but I really like this. If you don't like the pictures just type cmd/ctrl + R.

I find that the majority of the pictures appearing are of adequate quality for a random gallery in this forum and only a very small number of them have the quality of a "random google search".

Please keep it as it is as it is one reason I visit this site more often than I did in the past.
