Do you all hate your rewind crank?

Not really, i just wanted to know if its normal to worry this much and if your cranks wont turn every time you wind :)

Ehm, worrying this much might be 'not normal' if it starts extending to other trivial experiences as well...

I'm selling my M6 0.85. but it never occured to me that I might be selling it because of the rewind crank...
:p

ThnkGd I'm keeping the M3... no crank!

I hate when my I loss my grip on the Rewind of my M5....

I dont follow you here - M5 has a ratcheted rewind - so even if your fingers slip - it doesnt go spinning crazy like other cameras do. Thats one of many M5's features I like a lot.

This is also one of the things that makes the Zeiss Ikon nice.

Best rewind crank is that of the Nikon F4: it's there but you don't need it (because the camera has a built-in motor drive that also rewinds).

And of course the rewind crank of the Pentax LX is the most buttery of them all. The LX is the smoothest camera I ever had anyway.

The Nikon F5 is like this too. I have both. Two switches on both cameras- press button 1 and you can rewind manually. Press buttons 1 and 2 and it will rewind automatically. Very nice to have choices. My F5 even has a Leader-Out mod so the film sticks out a little bit when it's rewound. I like that because I trim the ends before I put them in the developing tanks. Much easier to do the little things while you can see them instead of trying to do them in total darkness of a changing bag.

I like the rewind crank on my M4, and when I got the M3, I though I would not like it since I was used to the M4, but the M3 is not that bad and I actually got used to it very quickly. The M4 will unravel a bit if you let it go, but the M3 stays where it is. I really think this M3 has not been used very much since 1955 because everything is just squeaky new on it.

My M2 has a knob. It's just fine. My OM2N has a crank, which is also just fine. My R4M has a crank, which often takes the application of a fair amount of force to do its job. It often spins away from my grip, unwinding half the roll.

So there is no problem if i rewind the crank a bit every once in a while just to make sure it still works? just to feed the paranoia. :D i should stop now

(geia sou file!)

I've never noticed any problems. I just give it a little clock-wise tension after loading and observing it rotating to frame 1.

"v. Gently rotate the LHS rewind crank until you feel tension"

(Step v. in the link dyao provided above.)

Yes and no - yes, there is a ratchet, but if your fingers slip the rewind handle will _sometimes_ spring back into its recessed storage position and this disengages the ratchet. It's certainly happened to me a couple of times.

I understand all that, it is a nice feature....But my fat finger/thumb tend to slip off the rather short crank nub, if I rewind too fast.

I don't mind the rewind knob on my M2. However, with the Leicameter mounted on the camera there is a lot of torque beeing applied very close to the flimsy plastic button/lever on the meter and that can be a bit scary, its probably not too hard to break off that button.

The slippage of an M6 rewind was inconvenient , but not that big of a deal for me in the grand scheme of things. Certainly not after dealing with the teeny-tiny, sandpaper-like rewind knob of a IIIf...

Well that doesn't sound good. I have a couple Leica meters on the way so I'll have to pay attention to that.

As much as i love my M6, that much i hate my rewind crank.
i think.
Is it normal that it doesn't turn every time i take pictures?
do you turn it a bit every once in a while just to see if everything is OK? Just to see it turn every time you wind?

Am i paranoid?
This annoys me too. I once forgot to put a roll of film in my camera. I noticed the problem taking photo number 39, and I was not very happy, I lost 38 photos.
Now I'm always checking that it's turning, and wondering if I forgot something when I don't see it turning.

The M5 is good. The M2 expertly serviced no longer recoils if I lose my grip on the rewind knob. The OM2n rewind is so good that I worry that I have no film in there. If I was buying a la carte I would definitely go with the M2 style knob, but I can live with the M6 OK.

Never a problem

Never a problem

I don't get the hate. I have an M6 classic and it rewinds exactly the same as the MF Nikons I use (FM2, FM2N, FA) and have used for many years. Same size winder and crank, same feel of film rewinding onto a cassette. I had an M3 and was annoyed by the slow winding knob. I no longer own that camera (didn't care much for the loading of it either). But I love this M6 and have been using it for over a decade. Rewinds beautifully...
