I saw a photo the other day on one of the Olympus EP-1 review sites of the EP-1 partially taken down. Yes, it looks as if there is a good amount of plastic under the SS and aluminum skins. The is sold as a 'consumer-grade' camera, and this version will not have an alloy chassis. The camera feels very solid and robust.

I just hope the camera lives up to all the hype that is surrounding it at present, never mind any plastic. Somehow I don't think it will live up to what people are expecting, apart from it's "retro" ish looks it's hardly what one would call revolutionary when you consider it's stats is it?
Many folk are getting swept away by it's publicity yet even Olympus themselves admit it is most certainly not a camera for advanced amateurs (and nor are *they* even aiming it at that market) and more in line with those upgrading from cell phone cameras so with that in mind and from the horses mouth and the price paying £700.00 for one can only lead to either disappointment or advanced Stockholm Syndrome. 😀

Surely bearings are what matters. And springs, I suppose. A camera that wears out after (say) 1000 exposures may suit a light-use amateur but not a heavy-use amateur. Likewise 1000 vs 10,000, or 10,000 vs. 100,000.
Some point-and-shoot film cameras reputedly had a design life of around 1000-2000 exposures. For someone like my father that's 35-70 rolls (of 36) or 3-10 years.

I keep driving my bicycles made of steel which will probably keep as least as long as my PEN FT's.
The usual things made of plastic keep for 2-4 years, most actual cameras may live 5 years which will be sufficient for the majority.
What I don't like are things made of plastic whith a thin outer shelf of metal, when they are announced as "metal body".
Even if I like Olympus a lot more as Panasonic, I prefer G-1 as a better (and more authentic) design.

Silly and ignorant. Only very, very expensive specialized metals can match or better affordable plastics when it comes to the material qualities that matter for something like a camera. Cameras get dropped and banged around. Quality plastics are stiff, but still elastic when faced with forces strong enough to overcome their stiffness. Only extremely expensive (comparatively) metals do the same--most metal deforms permanently, or breaks. There's a reason that the only step up from plastic in a modern camera frame is a complex, expensive magnesium alloy and not steel or brass.
Or, more pithily: a camera is not a bicycle (and even among bicycles, steel is rarely preferred).

As a Pen FT owner, I like how the new camera looks. My only complaint is that is it not truly a Pen (i.e. 1/2 frame that accepts without adapter Pen lenses) - but this will never happen.
As for this camera being in the heritage of pen cameras - you can make a case for it. The orginal pens were not made for the professional, but for the consumer - as is this camera.
The later Pen F's were certainly state of the art technology and materials, but I don't think the other Pens were - except being half frame. Where they not also made of plastic (I am not talking about the Pen F(T,V)'s now)?
Were not the consumer "Pen's" released before the Pen F series? Could maybe Olympus being doing the same - especially since they already hinted at this in their press release?

Actually, not that I need to explain myself because if you were to bother to check into the facts of the matter you would see how wide of the mark your aggressive rants were but then I highly doubt you are the type to look or care anyway. "Wetting myself....." What are you on about? For the record I am an Olympus owner & user of over 30+ years and still use an OM-1n and OM-2 (not that it's any of your business), I also own cameras by Nikon, Canon, Leica, Contax etc, etc. I am a an aged, mature photographer who has no childish allegiance to any camera manufacturer whatsoever and why would I or should I? Again, maybe you should be looking into your advanced symptoms of Stockholm syndrome should you actually know what the illness indeed is.
If you do wish to get into the realms of personal, insulting & attacking posts upon other members then maybe you should choose another outlet to vent your spleen instead of a photography forum where until now the debate was balanced and on topic.

Yes, that's a very good point.
I never owned a Pen myself but I do know like the Trip (which I've owned a few) there were quite a lot of changes in it's lifespan and the use of more plastics in the camera's build as it got older. I notice that Stephen Gandy has a page on the Pen @ his Cameraquest site which is quite interesting and shows "some" differences between the models and years:- http://www.cameraquest.com/olypenf.htm

All my rant did was upset you and deflect you from defending your insight that the E-P1 was aimed at people upgrading from a 'cell phone'.
