Do you ever buy a lens just because it looks good?

Would you, could you ever do that? Although I do not own this lens, I think it is a real good looking lens.

Yours truly,
Shallow Hal

P.S. My grammar is really poor. I meant, Would you ever buy a lens just because it looks good?

The Summitar. We've since parted. Not that it was a bad lens. It worked great. It was just useless considering I have the Summilux.

No, I wouldn't buy a lens based on its good looks. But I would buy and have bought a lens based on looking at images taken by that lens.

It reminds me of a joke I heard:

I man is walking down the road with a horse on a lead ... it's a very handsome black stallion and attracts a lot of attention from all who see it.

He is approached by another man who comments on the beauty of the animal and says he will buy it at whatever price the owner asks ... the man mutters "He no look good!" and walks away. Not to be shaken off easily the wealthy potential buyer follows him and keeps offering higher and higher amounts to which the owner responds in exactly the same way ... "He no look good!"

Eventually the owner is worn down by the ever increasing offers and the money subsequently changes hands ... the horse is passed to it's new owner who proudly leads it home to brag of his new possession to his friends.

The next day he discovers that the horse is actually completely blind and is so incensed that he was duped that he contacts the seller and demands his money back ... but to no avail.

The seller's response was simple ... "I told you but you didn't listen, that horse, he no look good!"

Aussie humor, nice.

Yes. I'm one of those shallow folks. When I first set my sight on the Canon 50m f/1.5 LTM, I know I just got to have it. Same for the Canon 25mm f/3.5 LTM lens. So tiny!!

Cheers,

I'm another Shallow Hal. I SOLD a lens Because I didn't like its design. It was a Leica Elmar 90mm f4 thread mount... it just looked strange on my M6TTL bodies.

I mean, it does sorta look like something Laurence Olivier would be holding in Marathon Man...

But it takes really pretty pictures.

I think the look of the tiny Leica lenses is what first got me interested in rangefinders. Small silver or black jewels. I presently own a near mint 50mm Summicron DR. Its size, design, weight and overall look is gorgeous.

those CV nickel lenses are sweet

those CV nickel lenses are sweet

If I had the cash lying around I'd buy the new nickel version of the CV 50/3.5 .

You bet it does! :)

However, you also should have seen the looks I got when I carried that combination about places like Chicago and Barcelona...
