do you haggle?

I love haggling...that's one thing we upstaters share with our "southern" brethren🙂. Occasionally I get the ignorant bigot that calls me a "Jew" like it's a bad thing, though...😀

And on forums...sometimes when I have almost enough money for something, I'll ask for a break. On Ebay I'm terrible...oh wait, that's called sniping...nevermind🙂

Any idiot who thinks only Jews "haggle" never met my dear departed Italian grandmother, nor my wife's dear departed Greek one!

As I was taught, only WASPs (white, anglo-saxon protestants) pay retail! 😀

You went to Malloy? Hey - you guys were the "enemy" football-wise.

Did Malloy close down a few years ago? Not sure. I was at dinner at PJ Clarke's on 3rd Ave. with my wife and kind of remember chatting with our waiter who I believe was a Malloy grad and said it had closed.

Couldn't believe it. Then again, maybe I'm confusing it with another Queens Catholic HS.

After Holy Cross, I went to SUNY-Buffalo (had to get away from home!) but then came back to NYC for grad school and career.

What a friggin' small world.

So Joe, when you coming back to NYC for another visit. This summer maybe?

We're going to be in Florida over Prez Day. You know, get out of the winter for a while. (Sorry, Joe, I couldn't resist). We've been here almost two years and the jury is still out on Arizona. We are very happy with our specific location as a place to be retired but AZ is like LA without the ocean and I never liked LA. Not a good thing so I can sympathize with Jorge. I'm at a stage in life healthwise that a slow stroll is more my speed than a hike so I didn't take him up on the offer.

We're three miles from Surprise stadium and five miles from the Peoria Sports complex so I've got four teams training right here, but nothing is like Ebbetts Field used to be. And I mean that seriously.

This is one of the biggest myths around! If you ever want to see haggling, try doing business in the Chinese community. They haggle like I've never seen anyone haggle before. The Persian community isn't far behind them. Haggling seems to be quite an expectation, and art form, in many cultures.

As for me... I've never been a good haggler. I once bought a Rollei lens hood at a British boot sale, while on a vacation, and paid the full asking price -- 2 pounds. The seller looked at me like I just landed from Mars as I handed him the money. As I walked away he muttered something like "I would have given you that piece of junk for free if you had just asked." In the end, I was happy... and he had a good story to tell at the pub.

of course you do, in a camera store or at a garage sale or maybe the second hand store...it is expected.
at least i do anyway - but i grew up in new york, where if you did not haggle you were thought to be a fool or worse, a tourist!

but i'm talking about here on the forum.
i just developed a curiosity about this and felt a strong urge to ask.

if you see a great lens or camera body advertised here but think it's a bit too much, do you email and ask for a lower price?

or if you are selling and setting a price, do you set it thinking that others will try to negotiate for a better price?

i hope this is not too personal a question and please just ignore me if you think this out of line to ask.

joe

if the price is right I buy if not ai just walk away....it REALLY ticks off the haglers 😀

I can understand you're "concern" regarding Phoenix area - and AZ generally is bcoming a CA "mirror" w/o the beach.

But FL instead?

Oh well, check it out - but talk about congestion --- South FL makes LI look bucolic!

Agreed, FL "winter" is warmer - but keep in mind AZ winter lasts 6 weeks!

You might want to take a drive down here to Tucson (we're here now - hurray). Our sprawl is getting bad - but nothing like Phoenix (yet).

BTW: You probably know that they built a minor league park down by Coney Island (Class A team in Met's farm). There's also one on Staten Island (Yankees) and one further out in Suffolk County (Independent). There's also a proposal for one by the Nassau Colesium (i.e. the old Mitchell Field area).

Meanwhile, the Ratner Corp. obtained the NJ Nets basketball team and plans a new arena on Atlantic Avenue that will include thousands of apartment/condos (mixed income) plus major retail. Irony is - they will use air rights over the LIRR railyards where Walter O'Malley wanted to build a new Ebbets Field fifty years ago!!! :bang:

Oh well ... such is life.

Happy new year,
George

I'm a fool, i always pay right away, although where i live u should know that the seller have doubled the price only for that cause!

I don't haggle when buying books and even if i wanted to, i wouldn't because books are books, priceless!

But when buying used or 2nd hand equipments, one needs to haggle, but the sellers are really tough and they rarely back up, watching my mom haggling, they really take a lot of time to compromise, and if u could keep it up that long he can give u a 50% off 😱

I usually ask politely for a 10% discount, and the seller says no, and i say one of these phrases usually: "Hey it's the 1st buy, u need to be mroe generous with me, i'm gonna come back here a lot" and the seller usually says:" U seem so sweet and i'd love to do soemthig specially 4 u but believe me i just made an autodiscount and this way i'd lose my profit" And i pay 😀

Or Me:" Hey, tell u what?? That's gonna be mine, how about a special price for me??" U gotta do that only the way a woman does 😛
The seller:" Ofcourse, how often one sees a special character like u, whatever u wanna pay pay."
And the conversation continues, the result is less than 5% discount half way and i'd pay that because i've already ahd enough with the seller's flirting 😱
