I have an M4, is there supposed to be a red dot on there somewhere? I checked, and couldn't find one. Is my camera broken now?

Red dots are not scary, they are obtrusive.
I do not like the red dot neither on chrome nor on black cameras. Neither I do like engravings on the front but I could live with them. If I ever decide to buy an M4P, M6 or M7 I would replace the red dot with a black one - I like that look a chrome body with a black dot has.

HCB used to put tape on his camera's, but tape on a chrome camera...
I think this is why they invented duct-tape.

Again, I find the first reply to be my thoughts exactly.
Red Dot = Cheesy, YUCK.

This is a crass and offensive comment.

I personally don't care for the red dot on black cameras - it's an aesthetic issue - which is why my M6 wears a DAG black dot.
On chrome I think it looks OK.

And here is where we differ from car nuts:
a Mercedes owner would not want to remove the star to be able
to approach pedestrians more stealthily.

That can't be the reason you don't use the M4-P, the red dot will be covered by your hand when you use that camera

Case in point: I am walking down the street with my wife and a good looking twentysomething girl walks in the opposite direction. I glance at her non-chalantly (trying not to oggle) and carry on with the Mrs. I begin to take a swig of diet soda when my wife says "I cannot believe that girl that just passed us was not wearing underwear!"
I nearly drowned.

No, they add a bullbar instead...
Bullbars should be forbidden in town, it is very dangerous and distructive for pedestrians and bicycel riders (sorry, it had to come out).

My M5s need red dots!
Assaf. I really doubt the man in the car saw the red dot in the camera. I'm more inclined to think that he saw the camera, and just the camera.
What would we do if the red dot really had so much power?

You guys really need to get a life. Nobody really cares or even notices the RED DOT. Only Self concious owners or other Leica users who are embarrased for people to see they have a Leica care. i'd say 98% of the public, including photographers have no idea what a Leica is or its significance in the owrld of photography. Heck, most Germans do not even know there is a German Leica camera. It amazes me that Leica users are so touchy about the logo. You don't see Nikon or Canon users making such a big deal over the logos on their cameras, why should we?

Don't worry, Gene, nobody really cares for that red dot.
I was (and still am) like you (and all of us, really) smashed at all these caring about that stupid red dot. But then I noticed that nobody really cares about it. People sigh a comment about it, here and there, and that's all.
I was excited at the idea of starting my first poll ever and that was a great topic!
Don't worry. We all have lives just as you.
Hey, have you voted?

Nah, don't like it. Performance aside, nothing looks better than an M3 with a 50mm Summarit F1.5, and one of those steel rectangular hoods (XOONS). Close second (aesthetically, anyways) is an M3 with a rigid 50mm 'cron with one of them collapsible barn-door hoods.
Both understated retro-gorgeous, just chrome and black. No red crap.
