I think they persist in using it because of tradtion. Imagine them producing a camera other than the MP without a red dot. People would scream bloody murder! But one of the nice things about owning a Leica is being able to modify your camera. Maybe they should make the black dot an ala carte option? I am sure they could sucker some people into paying 50 euros for it...

I remember encountering a guy with a RD-1 and there was no red dot but the distinct shape of the body (and it's relative big size) immediately made me notice it from far away. The thing with the leitz red dot is that when it is tappered black and (the logos too), the whole leica M seems just like a rectangular black brick, really looks like a 50 dollars camera. People just don't think it's a serious tool! The red dot is like the nikon red band, it screams a little "expensive camera"... I don't like when I shooting candid in parties smart guys talking about how nice Leica cameras are.

I couldn't vote because there is no option "I couldn't care less"; I own both an M2 (without red dot) and an M6 (with) and I don't miss the dot on the M2, nor do I care much about its presence on the M6.

why not a blood of pig? like swedes do joke about the red color paint of old houses :p

No, it is better if we leave pigs alone

Maybe you could do as I do. I Wear a Rolex Oyster Explorer 1 to draw attention away from my M6. But joking apart, logos now seem to be par for the course and providing they are tasteful, as I believe the Leica red Dot is I think that is fine. Sometime people ask me if my Rolex is a real or a fake. I am now waiting to see if the same question arises with my M6- Watch this space- sorry for the pun.

If you don't like the red dot, ask me and I'll mail you one of these black dots to put over your red dot.
