Do you post images here at RFF ... if not why not?

Can't be bothered with the limitations on the image before I am allowed to post.

I like Flickr and Facebook for their ease of posting images and link them into threads here. It would be nice to be more active in the weekly picks thread and crowd, but I've given up on that due to the limiting nature of the upload process here.

The images I post elsewhere often are 800px at the long end and quality settings make them usually 250 to 300KB each. That's too big for here and since there's no automated downsize script running with the upload I have to resize them myself which makes posting here a hassle and me an irritated man. And I refuse to lose my good spirit over matters like that so I've taken my stuff elsewhere.

So here I mainly talk camera, modus operandi, Howto... and DIY... stuff. IMHO this has always been mostly a gear forum, there's little emphasis on philosophy, composition, exhibitions, books, etc anyway. I'm posting images to the Leica User Group on FB, where there is little gear talk and many pictures

There's some wonderful people in the gallery ... Tony (Leica M2 fan) comes to mind. His comments are sprinkled very liberally and they are always friendly and encouraging. He's an excellent example for all of us IMO!

Since I don't use rangefinders I will only post photos to threads that don't specify camera type. I think the gallery should only be used for rf photos out of respect for the people that are here because they actually use rf's.

I post img in threads, never done in the galleries.
I don't look at them, so I don't add my shots.
RFF is not the only forum I frequent, so there would be too much confusion for me.

I already post them on my own blog and gallery.

rangefinderism is an ethos, an aesthetic. stefanjozef, for example, does not use a rangefinder, but the photos he posts here are indubitably of the rangefinder aesthetic. i am using an om-1 almost constantly for my film work because my r2m is lensless at the moment. other than getting a bit closer for my "intimate detail" photos, there is no difference in what and how i shoot. no one has complained about my kit. and anyhow, you do not have to tell what your kit is in the gallery info boxes.
for me, it is worth the hassle to compress images for the gallery. no more than 5-15 a week in any case. shoot! post!

I'm a little concerned that the leading poll choice so far is inability to post images due to confusion or technical reasons.

I've never thought it so ... but obviously if you look at the results here many do!

Can it be made simpler?

yes, this is what i wonder many times. other forums have a 'drag and drop' feature which is very easy. but many including me also find that the sizing requirement also seems not to work for some. i really enjoy this forum, and it would be great if this could be addressed in some public way, either with a 'primer' or even taking a look at why so many have this/these problems.

I post some, but it is very cumbersome and limited. I prefer to post on flickr, and link to them from here.
There are various tag, set and group features which make it easier to categorize my photos on Flickr
Also I like the wider audience available to browse and comment.
RFF is a great resource, I like the pic of the week threads and the quality of the images posted is wonderful.
It seems like most people enjoy sharing photos and getting feedback, RFF's user base is too limited to me to post only or mainly here

There are a lot of members here who are very active within the forum that I never see images from ... in threads or in the gallery.

No doubt there are those who value the technical information about cameras available here and those who just like to look at others photos ... and possibly many who don't have the confidence to show their own work.

I'm curious?

My problem is that my Rangefinder work is all on Film, and I've just started a process to scan all my film with a good photo scanner, rather than rely on mini-lab CDs. So for me, it's the inconvenience I'd have to go through to post all my images from RFs right away.

Also, I traditionally do the Flickr thing, which is where all my digital work I want to share ends up. All the "Film" images on Flickr are from CDs or the one or two good scanning sessions I've gotten in already.

Rest assured, however, that as soon as I figure out what I'm doing, that box of film will be scanned and you will all have ample opportunity to either bask in my talent and brilliance, or laugh at my hubris.

Yes I often use SLR's but I also use a Contax G1 and I've recently bought a Fuji GF 670W , and I have a Konica Auto S2 which I keep meaning to get back on the street. I love using rangefinders but some of my best shots in my opinion are with my old Canon A1 and FD lenses. I like to swap about, cameras and film.

I would post to threads but I'm not sure where to. I have difficulties in finding categories to add my photos. Also I'm a little awkward in starting a new thread for only a picture or two. RFF gallery I thought was useless (though I've never tried it), but many here have said that it's actually good and people seem to be interested in them. Maybe I should add pictures there...

I've only added photos to Flickr but I don't like that every photo in Flickr is either "Awesome!" or "Nice catch!". I'd like to have some real comments on my photos.

+1, this sums up my sentiments completely. I post on Flickr, but I guess I'm "shy" according to the poll and don't want to spam people...

I post images here, mostly to illustrate what particular lenses or cameras do as opposed to showing off personal best shots. RFF has many strengths, and I spend at least some time each day here, but as a forum for storing images it is very limited (limited size, resolution, etc.). This is a description, not a complaint. I can see why Stephen would not want to pay to maintain a server farm a-la-flickr. But there are viable ways to link to images elsewhere, so the point is moot.

i haven't posted recently, but if i remember correctly, my posted images appear as thumbnails because i don't have a flickr or other outside account. when clicked, they are still quite small and, IMHO, have a difficult time competing with larger images in the same thread.

as a consequence, if i post something i think fits a thread or might be of interest, i'll probably do so on another forum.

to end on a positive note, i do like the classifieds here much more than on the 'other' mostly rangefinder forum.

Maybe I fall into the 'I'm not a very good photographer and I don't want to constantly subject everyone to pictures of my kids like I do on Facebook' category that Bob338 wants to include! Sorry Bob.

I post to the gallery without any problem using Picasa as the tool to compress the images easily. If you select the 'export to folder' option in Picasa you get some options which easily allow compressing to the size used by RFF. Then in the RFF Gallery you select to upload from your PC and select this exported image folder and file. No URLs or links to images necessary.

I think in the 11 months I've been posting to the RFF gallery I've learned more about how to take pictures than in any time before. I really value the comments. I also really appreciate and enjoy the Gallery Picks thread on Mondays. The sense of reward when my images are chosen for this is really something. I try to add my picks as often as work/life permit as I think the photographers who are uploading to the gallery here are offering up some excellent work.

Flikr? I can't get my head around it. I've got an account. Uploaded some pics. No one seems to view them ever. No one comments. Can't be bothered.

I am guilty here! I subject people to photos of my kids.
Not many people like such photos, but my family comes first and this is the way it is going to stay. I think that there is room to post about anything at all, and then let the viewers decide what type of images to look at.
