Talking mainly about 800 and 1600 ISO. I usually don´t do any Noise reduction because I like the grain. Yet what is your experience, what is the slider setting where you find noise the most pleasing in most cases ?
No NR.
I use 1600 almost exclusively for black and white.
"well integrated" was the word somebody used on a recent post to describe the grain/noise and I agree. Feel the same way about the GRD1, too.
It depends on the noise ... occasionally my M8 produces quite noisy images at 640 in very low light and when you look closely at the noisy areas it's a bit ugly. To me it never looks like grain I'm afraid!
I post process my images as tiffs in ACDSee Pro which has an excellent noise removal filter. Too much noise reduction looks crap though and gives images a smeary look that I like even less ... film is so simple! 😛

I use 800 iso for all low light situations and avoid 1600 iso. I would rather risk camera shake and choose a lower shutter speed. With 800 iso I don't think there is any need to use any noise reduction and have never used the slider in Epson Raw, though it is my converter of choice.
thank you! Tuesday the metros were running real slow (especially in and out of the stations) and it allowed me to get a few shot in shots that i wouldn't have normally been able to.
it's been a very different experience trying to use the R-D1 (rather than my Ricoh) on the metro. the shutter is so loud that i am regulated to reflections only. "seeing" the shots has been a whole new experience!
