Yes, the paint can wear although it is very durable and the material underneath is silver in colour (it's a magnesium alloy?) not brass.

Used ZM may not look as "good" as brassed Leicas, but it sure beats having the brass odor on your hands.
And either ZMs brass quickly, or I am really beating mine. Almost all corners are showing.

I had a silver one for 3 years . Shot 3-4 rolls per month (not much). It showed nearly new when I sold it this year.

I dropped mine and it has a tiny bit of wear on it. No brass, I love the Zeiss Ikon and rangefinder photography in general. It really pushed my knowledge of photography and forced me to look at the world differently. Ok I just rambled on, but no brass and I have a black Ikon.
