Does anyone have their own web space/site if so what company web space creator do you use, why l ask is that l fancy having my own web space with a built in gallery, but l must admit to being a bit of a computer ludite😱😱

My photo webpage (see my signature) is hosted on a NetSolutions server. I've had it for 5 years, but this will be the last year I keep it up.

I have a personal / friend&family page that is hosted on a HostGator server. Had this for 8 years and will keep it runnin 'til I kick the bucket.

In both cases, I simply type the HTML myself.

I taught myself HTML programming some years ago and did my own site, then revamped it a couple of years later. But, for the current site, i just used SquareSpace.

Not sure what Ko.Fe. means by it not being "effective." What is the site supposed to do, other than display what you upload to it?

SquareSpace allows you a trial, so you can choose a template, manipulate it a bit, upload images, and try to tailor it to your needs. I'm a designer, and had specific wants.... Didn't accomplish everything i would have wanted, and i did have to 'fudge' things because of the way SquareSpace's template scaled images, but it's fine for now. I'm not a pro photographer, but even if i were, SquareSpace would be an appropriate choice.

I'm using a Dutch host for my webspace; sohosted.com
Never had any problems, and they even upped the webspace and bandwidth allowance last months and reduced the price of the package.

I'm running a Wordpress blog on it and a very old version of Coppermine Photo Gallery on it too.
Really need to restyle that stuff one of these days.

no website but a blog for showing my 'better' images...it's free and might look better if i put some effort into it.
websites are for making money and if that's not happening then it is a waste of money & time.

Waiting for years to have someone voluntier to build me one but no one came forward so, chose Wordpress and it was not that difficult but then, my page is very basic.
I use Inmotion hosting, very affordable and super reliable.

thanks for all the great replies chaps, a lot to mull over but not tonight as l am off to bed, up at 05:45 for work, but thank you alyway and l will pour over your replies tomorrow🙂😎

I have a wordpress.org site hosted on DreamHost.com

I use a Klasik-child theme template which is one of the one's included with the wordpress themes. From there I designed it to have the homepage show the three categories and archive of my work and one can click on one of the portfolios to open- paintings, prints, photos, or get there from the drop down menu.
I renamed the blog section to be Words to differentiate it from the visuals and be more about descriptions of contemporary activity as well as past works.

I've had a few access problems over the years but DreamHost support has been right on it and gets it solved immediately.

I had a problem a few months back and never figured out exactly what happened but have done a temporary fix.

In the end, they are time consuming and can be a lot of fun, and it is a rewarding way to share one's work with people around the world.

I registered my domain name (leonin.net) through GoDaddy. You only need to do this if you want to use your own domain name.

I USED TO have inmotionhosting to host my website when I was doing more than just post images on my website. You only need this service if you plan to build your own website -- the hosting service provides tools.

I NOW use zenfolio (still using my domain name) because all I need these days is a site for images. You do NOT need to own a domain name to sign up with zenfolio or its primary competitor, smugmug. Both service offer templates that allow you to semi-customize your site. I can recommend either one.

I have my domain at Namecheap, used to have a server at home, but now I don't have a proper uplink, so I'm considering having it at my girlfriends place. This way I have full (oh well..) control over my content.
As for the software, I wrote the code myself - which is a waste of time, since the wheel is already invented 🙂

Question I would ask is - 'what do you want the site for?'
The problem I have is keeping my website going, and that really means that it isn't doing what I want it to do, whatever that is! Have you considered having a 'Blog' - the possible advantage is that you can easily add relevant text to the photo.
I have to wonder how many guys set up websites and blogs with great enthusiasm but then don't maintain them - really needs a weekly input to both and possibly on the same day of the week if you are out to attract regular viewers.

...websites are for making money and if that's not happening then it is a waste of money & time.

I could not disagree more.

A web site forces an amateur to reflect on his or her work as a whole. The process of selection, editing, organization, and presentation is a process of defining who you are as a photographer and what you value as a person. Focusing on single images, as blogs usually do, is less likely to encourage that analysis and may invite what I think of as "creative drift."

Of course, an amateur can accomplish this focus in other ways. But a web site is handy because it provides a template or structure for analyzing and articulating what you feel is important.
