Cheers and Thanks !

Helen, as an option I think you could make your Flickr private. I believe links to private embedded content will work.

I've had Flickr for years and use it only for hosting embeds on other sites. After years of use I have one follower. It might be against Flickr's rules, but you can embed without their branding and linking.

Of course, completely starting over can be nice, too. The new RFF gallery looks good, if you only want to share here.

I'm curious as to why you're considering deleting your Flickr account, Helen... or is the question simply an academic consideration in case you might want to delete it in the future?

Links to photos that do not include the specific URL for the photo will cease to work if you switch the source from public to private access. It depends on which of the Share options you use when copying the link. The Share option link on private items includes a coded access key; the BBCode option on private items includes a coded access key for the flickr page, and an open URL link for the actual image as well.

I've been using Flickr since Feb 2008 as a general purpose image server. It gives me one place where I can post photos to a half-dozen or more photo forums; I can manage all my content from the one place.

I don't see much point to keeping all of it private ... I keep some things private because they're only intended to be shared amongst a small number of persons or they are specific things to illustrate a technique or idea and not intended for 'general viewing'. I don't do any promotion, but over the years about 350 people have followed me, and I've followed about the same number of other people. I enjoy seeing what they post and occasionally we exchange notes and comments. It also becomes a 'tertiary backup' for my finished JPEG renderings this way (first and second backups being part of my local image processing/computer management workflow).

One of these days I'll set up my own image server again, but in the mean while, and for 13 years, Flickr has done a good job of operating in that manner at very low cost in dollars and maintenance time. 🙂

The private idea is a good one. Flickr is too handy for hosting images to be posted elsewhere. I have a private album for some stuff I'm trying to sell, it's quite useful for things like that.

I stopped paying for the Pro option, when they jacked the price through the roof. Now I just deal with the occasional and unobtrusive ad and enjoy my "free" account.

I find it a good universal place to host images for sharing elsewhere. I only upload my best shots or ones to illustrate a particular purpose.

Once in awhile, I'll share the link to my photostream. I've got just a few followers, but I like getting notified when fellow photographers whose work I like post something new.
