Does quality beget snobbery?

When it comes to resolution - size does matter (we need a "poker face" icon)

Absolutly, (on both counts).
If you're not shooting 12x20 at about $12.00 US per sheet, you're not doing photography.

No it's not the quality of the gear, It's the size of your negatives that count 😀

I agree kmack, my Iskra 2 beats any of these puny small format things. She grins 😛 everytime she's out and about with them. 😀 Regards. Peace.

Unfortunately I did not grow with a natural sense of humility. Therefore, my humility goes to the extent I am aware of my snobish trends.

Cheers,

Careful, now: if good food were demonstrably superior, it would have remained the food of choice for professional food eaters ...

Nice try, but the logic of your rebuttal is flawed. I was talking about the use of the Leica brand by professional photographers. "Good food" is not a brand, and there is no general job category of "professional food eaters." Perhaps you mean restaurant critics or professional tasters? Anyway, I assume they would prefer good food over bad food. 😀

Gabriel, I guess you mean how did McDonaroo become the food of choice for "billions served" . My response would be to suggest you ask the 'Buddah' he is wise... ;- )

I'm gonna be a troublemaker here! Let's stand together and take a picture of the same object at 50 yards. You with the Iskra and me with my RF 35mm & 135mm lens. All else being equal, which of us will have the superior image? Oops...... did I just see a frown appear on your Iskra? 😀

Seriously, I won't disagree that the larger format negative, used to it's full advantage, will give the superior image. However, you can't change lens and there are times when that can be very limiting.

I have an Iskra I and an Iskra II. They take fine pictures as the image below, taken with the Iskra II, will show but they aren't ideal for all situations. The smaller format interchangeable lens RF camera is more flexible and can be a better choice in some circumstamces.

Come on doubs43, this is about snobbery 😀 and my Iskra 2 is a real snob around SF stuff. 🙂 She doesn't care about anything less than 20x30 prints on the wall. I'll bet your Iskras feel the same way.

Sometimes I think she's less a snob and more a s#ut when she drops her leather cover and shows off her red undercover. 😛 😀 Regards. Peace.

Attention puny 35mm RF and 6x6 RF users , this is an elite (not snob, they don't have the goods only the attitude, where Elitists have it all) Fuji G690 BL speaking.. line up behind me please.

signed the "FUJI-Nator"

;-D

Yes, it does, BUT only when one confuses the quality of equipment with the quality of its owner.

I believe this is one of the grand logical fallacies of modern consumerism: that one who owns magnificent things is therefore magnificent as well.

The qualities of a thing and the qualities of the owner of a thing are of course independent events.

More on conspicuous consumption HERE.

Great gear doesn't necessaliy make you a snob. My first SLR was a Yashica FR. I made some great images with it. It wasn't until it died that I stumbled onto a Contax RTS and my first Zeiss lens. My images were the same, but the contrast and color were far superior. I really had no idea what I was missing. However, it didn't make me a better photographer, or a snob. High end gear doesn't give you an eye or even your own style. These things develop over the course of time. As much as I like my Planar, there's something about that old Yashica 50 when it's wide open that gives me the look I want when I photograph my kids.

I'm currently shooting a Bessa-R with a few CV lenses and a Yashica GSN. Yes, I'd like to shoot a Leica M, not because of the name, but because of the design. IMHO the M and the Ikon are two beautiful pieces of industrial design that happen to record incredable images in the right hands.

The best example I have of this is the senior who ran the darkroom when I was an sophomore. This guy owned just about every gadget that Nikon produced—long lenses, filters, motor drives—just a ton of gear. One of his classmates summed him up in a single sentence. "That guy's got a million dollars worth of gear and I haven't seen a decent shot come out of that (insert explative here) yet."

So, if your a gear snob that's fine, but can you take a compelling image? And if you can, is it you or your camera? My guess is that it's you.

Sir, I humbly bow to your superior and ultimately snobbish Iskra II. Now that you mention it, there is a certain attitude displayed by my Iskras that I couldn't quite place but snobbish could be it. I shall now fall silent where the smaller format is concerned. 😉

BUT..... there is the matter of my 4x5 Speed Graphic which can humble 6x9 easily enough. 😀

Just for grins I checked the MSRP on the following cameras published in the December 1968 annual camera review issue of Modern Photography.

Nikon F Photomic Tn (with built in meter) and 50mm f/1.4 $443
Leica M4 with 50mm f/1.4 Summilux $501

The M4 was only 13% more than the Nikon.
If you want to compare an espresso machine with an Italian percolator, knock yourself out. I wouldn't compare a Snap-On adjustable wrench with a Craftsman monkey wrench. Some people may be talented enough to do the same things with both tools, but I wouldn't be comparing both on use and price.

Besides, one's Bob Vila may be a Robert Capa's snob, and viceversa 😉

A Craftsman 10mm box wrench will work just as well as as a 10mm Snap-on box wrench. Please don't compare monkey wrenches to adjustable "crescent" type wrenches. 🙂
