Does the X100S make the X100 obsolete?

Only in the sense that everything is obsolete these days. There will always be something better nearly immediately.

The shutter may be quiet but the AF Sound of the X100 was the annoying part. There were two reasons why I sold the x100. The AF-sound and the unpredictable AF focussing.

; ) The X100s is extremely quiet .... But not silent ,the AF mechanism makes some slightly audible sound while focusing, turning on and off ..... in a room that is completely silent ....

X100
Obsolete, no. Less desirable, yes.

For me, it comes down to money: if the X100 is "good enough" for me, I would buy that because it'll be less expensive than the X100s.

All interesting responses. I'm happy to use 'obsolete' equipment as my main camera is an M4p. The X100 images I see are often very exciting and I had resolved to buy one- then the S version appeared at double the price and confused the whole issue. I think what I want is a digital Hexar AF. If the x100 is that - I'm happy....

In an absolute sense, sure. The x100s is an updated x100.

But we're all using obsolete cameras here - it's RFF. There are updates to nearly every camera I own, that hasn't affected my ability to take photos.

As to your second question - do you think you'll miss the new features (fast AF, x-trans, better manual focus)? How much would you pay for each feature? Is the total value of those features greater than the price difference?

i've been offered a x100 for £300 and i think i might go for it even though I really want a x100s. it gives me a chance to really test out if it's right for me and if i don't like it/want to upgrade I can do that down the line without losing too much money.

X100 has a huge benefit over the X100s, which is it's price when bought second hand.

It's good to have that choice now, like deciding between standard and premium.

I just got one new X100 body and now I can understand the crazyness about this little camera (reminds me a bit of my Canonet). It's efficient, it's fast, it has a nice, sharp lens and it's cute. Sure, it does have shortcomings like the AF not being as quick as my D700's, or the fact that it tends to overexpose at odd times for no apparent reason (it seems it shouldn't be used with the lens wide open under strong sun, despite the top shutterspeed of 1/4000th of a second).

Will the new model make the old obsolete? In the eyes of the rabid gizmo chasers, yes, but then, that usually works in favor of those of us who wait patiently instead of leaping at everything new.

BTW, I don't regret my X100, although it's in the plans to sell it (at a definite loss, I know) to fund an X100S body in about a year... :) Oddly enough, I really don't feel compelled to sell my D700 and replace it with a D800... wonder why...

Carry on! :)

I can't see the slightest reason for getting rid of my X100 and buying an S - and losing money in the process. The X100 is a superlative camera and I can live with the various quirks. For people just starting out with X100 ownership, by all means buy the S.

For what it is worth, the noise of the AF in the X100S can be bypassed simply by using the split image in MF/EF mode. It is near silent at that point.

I guess I just don't get the whole is it obsolete thing, must be a function of the "need the latest and greatest" generation. If I did not make a living with my X100, I might have just stuck with it instead up moving to the S.
