"A fool and His Money" .... can't yea just hear the Beetles?
These were $600 new... which was already ridiculous. However, limited edition stuff is never about value... it's about exclusivity.

Not really. It is in their (LSI's) to sell cheap plastic toys at grossly inflated prices. Its in their spirit to sell gilded cameras.
The overpriced gilded toy is not without precedent; when LSI sold their first LKA (LCA) for 10X or so the original, that sell the ball rolling.
What else were there? Expired (DEAD!) films selling for premium prices;
Plastic Toys from China which used to be promotional gifts have become objects of fancy which cost like the "real cameras;
And the likes of the Zorki-4, FED-5B ($95 or $100!), Seagull TLR, and even the Yashica GXN 35mm cameras were sold at crazy astro prices.
Obviously lomography was in for the business. PT Barnum style.
Cheap photography for the masses wasn't it.

P.T. Barnum lives! And apparently is the new CEO of Lomography...
While I would never consider a gold camera, I am intrigued by the LC-A+... it looks kind of fun.

It is the epitome of Lomography: overpriced toys...

I think the Lomography Society put together 10 rules of Lomography, I don't think any referred to the price of the camera. Having said that, the last rule is to ignore the rest of the rules.
I don't own a Lomo, but I think a simple camera with very few functions is closer to my ideal than a camera costing the same as a nice car.
Many people criticize the low quality lens in the Lomo cameras, but if it were a 1930s Leica lens scratched to hell by a Nazi bayonet, it would be called "character".
Sometimes I think if someone posted a picture here, without saying if it were from a Lomo or some Apo-Lanthar prototype, and asked "does this lens have character?", the first question would be "How much did it cost?".

Can I do lomography with a Leica MP and a Noctilux? Guess not.
"Lomography Products:
Lomographic products are all characterized by the following traits: they are practical and sensual, they look good, they’re friendly, inexpensive, sexy, un-political, a tad intellectual (but not too high-brow) and distributed worldwide. Their sole purpose is to do nothing other than serve the daily, thousandfold desires of Lomographic creative expression!"

You certainly can, you just need to have hipster friends to hang out with.

Lomography is doing like Leica: releasing completely ridiculous special editions because people will pay for the hype...

No, I think you can still take sh*tty pictures with it. 'The Whole Purpose' is still intact.

To be honest, I don't care about the rules Lomography invented to hype their products.
Lomo and Holga echo the communist ideals of equality and classless society and by being a camera for the masses.
Now look at the present Lomo, Holga and Che Guevarra... nothing but pop culture crap invented by the capitalists. Stripped of their ideals and now part of the system they fought.
Now where are my comrades...

It can't be a true Holga because all the gold plating and leather cladding sealed up the light leaks, thereby destorying the 'Lomo experience'.
Take that MP with it's Noctilux, beat it up against a brick wall, and thow it over an enbankment at the beach. Now you can do Lomography with it.

"Whatever happened to the cheap plastic philosophy.....", the original poster asks. Well, I am sorry to disappoint but that was never the philosophy at all. LOMO was launched by some yuppie MBA types looking to make a killing by buying cheap in the former Soviet Union and selling high to you. They succeeded.

My apologies. The 'you' was meant in a philosophical way. LOMO = branding/marketing/online sales. I don't like the cameras. I don't like the pictures. I don't like the hype.

Come to think of it, what is 'the whole purpose of Lomography'?
