doh - messed up my qlIII 17

Hi all,
So I managed to do something bad to my QLIII 17 while on vacation. I banged the lens against a stone wall and stuck the shutter. It would cock and the blades would move the tiniest bit, but they never opened. This was at all shutter speeds, including B. In my efforts to get it fixed, I turned the shutter dial and apparently tore something loose and now it spins freely without actually changing the shutter speed. At least the shutter fires now, but it's stuck in bulb.

My question is whether it's going to be worth it to get it repaired. I wouldn't mind getting the full-on overhaul by Stephan Gandy anyway, but if it seems like it'll need replacement parts and the cost starts climbing past $100...

winning? I assume you mean whining.

First, you are right. Prices for new QLIIIs aren't what I thought they were. At the least, I might pick up a backup that I can get fixed up later on.

However, I do not feel your accusation to be in any way approriate nor called for. I'm not whining about anything. The camera is broken, and I expressed a perfectly reasonable concern about repair costs. It's a legit question.

I appreciate feedback from others.

Hi,
The G'mans closer and therefore perhaps quicker but if you get stuck for parts, I do have a couple of parts bodies (lenses were damaged). If you need any, let me know.

I've also got a parts body.. actually, it's all in great shape and works properly, but the front lens element has a fingerprint etched into it.. I'd like to see it repaired so someone could use it

Your best bet is to buy a Canonet with a bad front element and put your front element onto it.
This is not a hard thing to do, a spanner -or fine needle-nose pliers- will be required.

I would not spend $100 to fix yours; perhaps you could trade it in on one already rebuilt.

And the 1st reply was way out of line. We already had one longtime member quit the forum today because of such remarks. They should not be tolerated here. This is not photonet.

From a personal experience, one of the most worthwhile things I ever did recently was to repair a QL17 GIII. It was a bit spooky at first, but the advice and support here was great (thanks again, everybody!) and it kinda encouraged me to stick around here and of course use the GIII quite a bit.

The one I have just had a sticky shutter and a bent speed ring tab, and it's worked fine ever since. If you take your time and don't force things, you'll probably have good luck. 🙂

As has been said, the front element swap is relatively easy and if Joe Friday has a good body minus lens element, this would be a much cheaper option than a repair or replacement. If you do go for replacement, it may well be worth offering up the old one here. From experience, there are a few people hunting good lens elements to fix otherwise serviceable bodies.

Hm. Well, I know that there have been a number of discussions here and there about how to do some repair work on QL III 17s. Should I choose to try it myself, can anyone point me to some pages? I'm not sure even how to get the front lens element off, for instance.
