I finally weakened after numerous 'foveon moments' and hit the buy button yesterday on B&H's site for a DP2M and lens hood ... it's in the post and should be here in a day or so. It would have been nice to get one locally but I was damned if I could find one for anywhere near B&H's current $799.00 ... that's a great price and subsequently very hard to resist.

It's nice to know that because of the somewhat bland, functional looks of the little Sigma my current accessories should be more than sufficient. I won't need a sexy new bag to go with it and shoes, shirt, pants etc should be fine!

And thank you to the contributors in the DP image thread for showing me why I eventually had to get this camera. 🙂

Keith,
Good to hear that you are getting one. I am eager to hear your impressions once you hae begun shooting with it.
I am thinking of taking the plunge with the DP2M as well.
Eric

I'm expecting the camera to have no real surprises because there's been plenty written about them. All it will need to do keep me happy is show me what I've been seeing in the image threads.

I don't do colour film any more because as easy as it is to develop at home the chemicals don't keep very well and they aren't readily available here in Oz at a decent price. I like the colours from my D700 but it's a lump of a thing to carry around and taking it 'bush' has never been an option as far as I'm concerned ... the little Sigma will be a gem in this environment.

I'll probably sell my RD-1 when the Sigma arrives because the whole rangefinder thing has pretty well passed me by these days and I don't really enjoy using that camera as much as I thought I would. It's sale will cover the cost of the DP2M.

If the price of the DP3M ever drops to what the DP2M has cost me I'd seriously consider one for the unusually long focal length ... great for portraits I'd imagine.

I've been lusting after one of these for about a week now. You may be near to pushing me over the edge Keith!

But then I keep reading about how the "IQ" makes the camera, and realize I've never been that good with IQ ... At the very least, I am looking forward to seeing your pictures taken with it. Then maybe ...

ps, Unicolor chemicals keep for many months in a half full bottle as long as you add time to the development cycle.

About those chemicals Chris ... I go through periods where I'll shoot a bit of colour film and then won't go near it again for six months or more. I've bought Unicolor and Tetinal kits from B&H and Freestyle and aknowledge that they work brilliantly but I have yet to use one to completion before it went off!

As for the poor little DPM ... I'll be attempting to bend the reality of its sensor very quickly ... I won't be able to resist! 😀

Wow, need to see what Keith can do with the DP2M. Do you plan to convert some files to B&W?

I think the first image I ever saw from a DP series camera was a black and white conversion posted in a thread here years ago. I remember staring at it and thinking it was the best digital black and white image I'd ever seen and one day I should have one of those.

So ... yes! 😀

Well the price in the DPM series is certainly something in its favor! And the size, and the weight, and the fact that it is a fixed lens camera (I love the concept of one lens, one camera - as long as I have enough cameras!) But I'm not sure I could make use of the purported "image quality". And I understand that you give up handling for IQ with the DP merrlils (By the way, my girlfriend gets shoes called merrills - are they the same? 😉 )

So for these reasons, I will wait until I see how you use it Keith - I know your style and I think you may be able to put it through the paces well.

Now as to the chemicals - I processed 4 rolls of 120 film with a box of unicolor chems in February, then sealed them and put the closed 3/4 full bottles in the fridge. In June I gave the bottles to a coworker. He used them in August, at box spped and at 3X box speed. The normally developed film came out a bit thin, but the pushed film came out perfect. A bit grainy, but he was shooting 400 speed film, developing it as if it was 3200 film. So I expected grain. But the color was bright and saturated, and the skin tones looked fine to my deuteranopic eyes. He was happy too. So what - 7 months of being in solution and refrigerated - not too shabby I'd say.

i did the same. Couldn't resist the price @799$
still waiting my dp2m to arrive. Lucky that i have my friend in US about to travel here, so zero shipping cost !!

Congratulations ... I faffed about something shocking before I actually made the decision. Visiting the B&H site every day ... cursor poised! LOL

Then I saw the message saying they were going to be closed for about ten days after the 25th March! 😱

😀

Keith, have you considered extra batteries and some from available grips? I know, there are two kinds of people - one like grips and others don't. But I find combination of boxy shape and metallic surface too prone to slipping....but I'm basing my thoughts on original DP, probably M's are better in this regard.

That said, my expensive Franiec grip is on way to me. I say expensive only because I bought DP1 used but for brand new $800 camera $35 is a piece of cake.

It'll be fun to see how many people end up hating this camera. 😉 I love mine at times, but on some other days, I just can't get on with it. I keep it though knowing that some days are just DP2m days (even if most aren't).
