The original was the same 7 element design as the D.R. as far as I know. About 1969 they came out with the first lightweight black model, 6 elements l think. I still have mine. I didn't see much sense in having a heavy chromed brass D.R. with it's eyes and inconvenient two position mount once I saw a chart of coverage of various Leica lenses at their closest focusing distance. A 90mm at it's closest focusing distance has exactly the same field of view as the D.R. at its closest distance. Bye-bye D.R.
