Chathaway, I looked at my first test roll with the new Nokton yesterday, and it shows amazing results. Very smooth rendering, no noticeable distortion and quite sharp in the corners, even wide open. This is one of the best corrected fast lenses that I have ever used. If you have the budget and are looking for a good 50, wait a few days .... with the first few hundred lenses shipped a week ago, I'm sure you will find many real life photos available online soon.
Also, my best built Leica lens until now has been the DR/rigid Summicron. I have to say, the new chrome Nokton feels built similarly. Much better than the original fragile LTM Nokton, and the new lens also seems more flare proof.

These photos of the new Nokton are making it hard to resist. I already love the LTM model.

I would either get a rigid Summicron as a classical 50mm lens (or DR), or get a modern 50mm 1.5 or 50mm/1.4 for that extra punch. The Milllenium Nikkor 50/1.4 with an Amedeo adapter is giving me lots of nice looking images, but a (cheap) Canon 50/1.4 or regular Nikkor 50/1.4 are great lenses and they are not expensive. They are classical 50mm lenses. A new CV lens is not really a classical lens yet, and the OP asked for a classical 50mm lens. Right?

50 Sumicron
50 Sumicron. Best bang fot the buck in Leica glass. Have chrome and it looks ok on black M6 and outstanding on chrome M2. Go back and forth between 35 and 50 as standard. On my present trip to Peru I left the 50 at home and traveling with 21/35/90. I think I would have been fine with just the 50.
