Good day people of RFF.

Just moved to London from Malaysia, to get me a degree. Brought all sorts of lenses + 1 camera.

Am finding it hard to procure a dry cabinet locally. Tried Jessops, camera world..to no avail. Do people here not use dry cabinets?

Best regards,
Danish.

I have just looked at internal humidity records for my house (London) and in the last year or so the relative humidity got no higher than about 63%. Most well below that. Dry cabinets are not needed for ordinary working cameras here in London. Climate control (temperature and humidity control) might be needed for very rare and sensitive cameras in a museum setting only.

Dear Danish,
Humidity is usually not a problem in UK. The relative humidity in your house will depend on all sorts of factors: insulation, double glazing, ventilation, how often you use the en suite shower/bathroom, indoor drying of clothes, hair drying etc. If you are worried, then an alternative to a dry cabinet is a dehumidifier which can be kept in the same room as your camera equipment. I am in the UK and use a Duracraft dehumidifier to keep the ambient relative humidity at 50 to 55% in winter months. Probably overkill.

I agree this depends on a number of factors. We have a relatively new house with low energy rating, double glazed windows, and circulating air heating. In Luxembourg where it rains a similar amount to London, if not more, we need a humidifier to keep above 50% and avoid sore throats and coughing. And this is a few kilometers from where we had the opposite problem in an old badly insulated building with radiator heating.

Cheers,
Rob

I think it would be best to buy a hygrometer and check the relative humidity where you store your gear. If it's 60% or above then a dry cabinet is a must.
