Has anybody used the dual range with the spec on R-D1? Will the lens work properly on close range? Just saw a very nice sample posted for sale...........

I've heard good things about that combo but have not tested one personally.

I don't have the manual readily available, but I do believe that the Dual Range Summicron was specifically mentioned to NOT be compatible with the RD-1. A quick google search shows this on Dpreview:

"Note: Lenses with external dimensions exceeding 20.5 cannot be used with this camera. In addition, the following lenses cannot be used (correct as of March 11, 2004) Hologon 15mm F8, Super Angulon 21 mm F4, Super Angulon 21 mm F3.4, Elmarit 28 mm F2.8 (early models), Summicron 50 mm F2 (dual range Summicron), Hektor 50 mm F2.5, and Elmar 50 mm F3.5."

I use mine frequently; the effective 75mm length is a nice portrait length and the 2.0 speed is also useful. I have not tried the close-up range because the eyes (viewfinder corrector) will not fit. I believe that this is why the lens is considered to be not compatible. It is not a very deep lens.

My DR is on extended loan to a friend, but I did give it a brief spin on my R-D1 last December. Mounts fine but as Ken notes the close-range "eyes" can't be used. Its high res, low contrast look comes through fine on the R-D1. Great for b&w. If the price is right, go for it.

I am surprised the close focus cam does not interfere with the interior of the R-D1. Lucky you, it is a great lens. The close focus will only work on M cameras because of the specific shape of the attaching camera and the location of viewfinder and rangefinder windows.

What a pity
I have already got a Summar, a Summitar, a Summarit, a current version Summicron and a Noctilux. The only justification for my 6th 50mm is that it has close focus. If I cannot use it on R-D1, which is my principal camera these days............sign...................

I might as well chime in and agree with what has been said by others. The lens works great but the specs don't. It's still worth buying. One of the best lenses Leica ever made! Very high resolution.!
