Hi guys,

I have a really dumb question regarding CLA-ing cameras in general.

The repairers can't...take or replace parts, can they?

Just asking because I might be in a dodgy place and I don't trust people haha...

Meaning remove something from your camera and put in another part? Sure, that's how many repairs work.

Of course, if they don't put in the right part, the camera won't work. So there are limits.

If you are worried that your part will be replaced with one in worse condition, well, it is possible. If I need a clean gear and your camera has it, I could swap in an older worn gear. And there is a chance that you would never know, as least until someone opened the camera up. It is standard practice to remove parts from other cameras and put them on a camera. But it isn't standard to swap parts upgrading one camera by downgrading a customer's camera. That's pretty scummy and illegal if not done with customer's knowledge and approval.

I recently finished up a Minolta Autocord overhaul. The focusing hood had a dent and large scratch. I had a junk Autocord with a clean hood. I put the clean hood on the overhauled Autocord. This is pretty standard practice, especially with cameras where new parts are not available.

Two things: take photos of the camera before giving it to a repair person. So if an exterior part comes back in worse shape, you have a record.

Second: deal with respectable repair people.

Three: tell the repair person upfront you require an itemised list/report of what they have done to your camera, including what has been checked, adjusted, tested, repaired, or replaced.

You will need this for the camera's service history/provenance.

Four: and it doesn't hurt to ask that the old/replaced parts be returned to you; at least this is how it works with reputable watch repairers.

This is a good point. The Leica techs I have used (DAG, Sherry,) have returned to me any parts they replaced, such as rewind knobs, shutter curtains, etc.

Yup. You just don’t know for sure if the CLA Tech screwed up your camera, so it’s best to try and do it yourself, then you know.

Yup - why not screw it up completely?

Agreed. Camera repair is not something you can do at home. It requires specialized tools and training.

I do my own car repairs. Put a new tie-rod end on my Cadillac yesterday. Easy job. I can repair my car, even though it is much more complex and expensive than a camera, because the tools needed are things everyone owns (or should), like ratchets and sockets, screwdrivers, and wrenches. The large size of a car and its parts makes repairs actually very easy compared to working with tiny parts in a camera and very few parts on a car need assembled and adjusted to the kind of precision needed for a camera.

To really CLA a camera, you need specialized tools because many camera parts do not come off with a screwdriver, and forget about a socket and ratchet set! Once you've got it apart, you need specialized lubricants that, unlike car fluids, cannot be bought at Walmart or Autozone. You'll need a shutter tester that can read the speeds of both the opening and closing curtains. If you're adjusting a rangefinder, there are tools for that, too.

Leave it to the pros; you'll just f--k up the camera. Hell, I still had to pay a shop to do a wheel alignment on my car after I replaced that tierod end. Alignments on cars are one of the few common repairs that you simply cannot do yourself because of the specialized equipment required to measure the proper settings for the suspension and steering parts.

It cuts both ways, I had a Leica part (minor) fitted to a FED once, many years ago, and an Olympus XA with a nasty deep scratch on the sliding cover came back without it and only substituting a second-hand part could have done that.
