dumb question about a polarizer filter

Just got a polarizer for my SLR and want to know when to stop twisting the filter to get the maximum effect.

Is it when the view seems brightest?
 
It's when you see the most contrast and saturation. Which should seem darker, not brighter. Test on a DSLR and see for yourself.
 
It works best when you point it due north. Watch the blue sky to see it turn dark. Also look at foliage to see the white highlights disapear. Window reflections also...
 
take the filter to your eye, turn it to see the effect. memorize from filter markings the postion. then screw the filter to lens or just hand hold it before the lens. there is no gimmic involved...
