Like many people here, I have 100's of GB of digital picture files stored on my computer - on backup CD and DVD media, on external hard drives, and on online storage sites. I find that I'm accumulating large quantities of backup discs, and I don't currently have a good procedure in place for labeling the contents of these discs.

To be clear: It's not like I'm "losing files" or anything - I can find all my pictures on my computer, and all pictures are backed up in multiple locations. My problem is - I'd like to be more organized with labeling the contents of my backup discs so that, if I did experience a virus/failed drive/stolen computer/etc, I'd be able to easily locate all my digital files on the backup discs and know exactly what is on each disc...

I'm looking for a solution in the "real, physical world" outside of my computer. I keep a set of backup discs at work, but they are not well labeled and organized. If someone stole my home computer and all hard drives, I'd like to have a way to know exactly what is on each of my backup discs....

I'm looking for some sort of program that can help me quickly print a "reference printout" page (on 8.5x11" paper) for each backup disc that tells me the details of what is on that disc:

-name of each folder contained on that disc:
-number and type (jpg, dng, crw, erf, etc) of files contained in each of these folders
-whether or not this disc contains the entire contents of that folder (some folders are >5GB and would thus span 2 discs)
-if the software can read metadata, it would be nice to print out keywords and some other basic info (camera, location, etc)
-date backup was created
-my name and some other "custom" info that I could type in
-It would be nice if it has the capability to print some thumbnail images (say, 1 per folder)

I can do this manually in Microsoft Word, but it would take me weeks. I'm looking for something quick and mostly automated - just put the disc in my drive, the software reads the contents, and spits out something similar to what I described above.

If something like I'm describing doesn't exist, does anyone have a recommended workflow for labeling and/or organizing DVD backups of photos? Ideally, something that includes relatively extensive info about the disc's contents, including some metadata...

Thanks!!

Regards,
Scott
