Dynamic Korea

I hear ya... I often schlepp too much gear with me as well - something you really want to avoid when traveling. You become a slave to the gear.

I've been slowly and steadily decreasing my travel bag over the years as well. I started with a 25lb.+ backpack of Canon crap. Now I'm down to a TTP/UD20 with an M8/Ikon and a bunch of lenses. Loving every minute. :p

But you're right - some gear is just so tempting to bring along. I feel the same way about my Mamiya 7II...

Yeah, fist I was just thinking S2 50/1.4 and 28/3.5, but then I thought about Sapa and Ha Long and how wonderful Velvia or Provia will look in 6X9.

This is Busan, right? I've been to Seoul a bunch of times but never Busan. Would love to get down there one day. Loving this series btw!

P.S. If you don't take the 690 to Vietnam you'll regret it later! Just my 2 yen ;)

Jon, thanks. Busan is great. It's my favorite city. It doesn't feel as souless as Seoul. They speak Korean in a very Japanese accent. Lots of Japanese signs too. They use lots of borrow words from Japanese too.

I'm taking the 6X9 to Vietnam. I just finished packing. I'm going to post a shot shortly, but I am taking:

-Nikon S2 with 2.8cm f/3.5, ZM 25/28 Finder and that 11,000 yen 5cm f/1.4
-Zeiss Ikon with ZM 18mm f/4, ZM 18mm Finder and Leica 35mm f/1.4 Summilux-M ASPH
-GSW690III

It all fits in my F-2 which is my cardinal rule.

I have to ask :D:D:D

Which Nikon S2 are you taking??

Nice set! I love how you get in there with the people and photograph all the things you're not supposed to.

I'll tell you how I got over medium format for this type of photography: I went to a friend's exhibition recently, he was showing street photos taken on "amateur" superia 400 with a leica. Drum scanned, printed 1.1m wide and framed, they looked beautiful. He sold them all for $10k each. Thats when I realised what 35mm is really capable of and that I was stuck with small apertures, big cameras and 12 shots a roll for no real reason.

I'm sure I don't even need drum scans to print that large, but they would help for sure. It's not so much just the sharpness from medium format but the detail and the look. I only get 8 shots 120 and 16 shots on 220. I have over 100 rolls of 220 so I need to keep shooting it! I'm happy to hear that you enjoy my shots. Where are you friend's pictures posted, if anywhere? I love taking pictures in forbidden areas, at least when I can get away with it.

I think i've seen most of these pics on your flickr stream over the past couple months, but it's definitely nice to see them all in one batch and large-ish. Keep up the good work!

My experience was that 28mm was not always wide enough. At least an 18mm for tight spots around temples or in narrow alleys in markets.

Very nice photos. You have captured a Korea I was afraid had completely disappeared. I haven't been there in over 20 years. From the TV the wife and I watch, it isn't even close to the same country.

I think you willl find lots of photo ops in Viet Nam as well. I haven't been there in 40 years. It was a beautiful country, but sightseeing wasn't the primary thing going on when I was there. I look forward to seeing your photos from there as well as more from the Land of The Morning Calm.

I have many more pictures to post from Korea. Thanks for the nice comments. I am taking my father, a USMC Vietnam Vet, back to Vietnam with me. This will be he second after the war (I took him for the first time two years ago) and my 3rd time there. 28mm is definitely not wide enough, which is why I'll have the 18.
