E-P1 Traditional Dancers in Bali

Just returned from Bali. Great colours from the E-P1 and kit lens. Shot as jpg with min processing.

John, those are very nice. I am considering the EP-1/2 or the GF1 in the near future. Did you find any trouble with the focusing with your EP1. I think it's known the GF1 focuses faster, but I wonder if it would be that noticeable.

I just downloaded some full size image sample jpgs, and found the EP1 samples to be a little better than the GF1. I have to say I wasn't quite impressed with either samples I saw compared to my now old EOS1D mark II. I was hoping to get at least that quality in a smaller camera so I don't have to carry that big thing around. I wonder if the RAW files are a different story...

I am also considering the DP2, but lower resolution and very slow focus turn me away.

I don't really have a problem with the focusing, though I would not use it for sport (I have a 20D for that). But for this quite energetic play it was fine and all were in focus. When using my cv 21/4 I just guess and shoot with the majority fine when just set at infinity. In that rspect it is very fast 🙂

I have had a 20D for years and if I made a strict comparison (pixel peeped) the 20D would probably still be superior so your findings come as no suprise. But the E-P1 has more resolution (for cropping space), IS (which is very good when you have never had that before), small size and the ability to use my M lenses and old OM lenses.

I think it is a little unfair to compare with the 1DMKII with it's huge pixel size and what that cost to buy. I haven't really used the RAW files much as I don't have the plugin for PS but the jpgs come out fine.

All in all, I think it is one of the best of it's type for DSLR quality in a small, versatile body.

John, you know it's a free download from the Adobe site, don't you? Just did it myself as I've bought a GF1.

sorry, not trying to be unfair in comparison. I haven't been involved with what's going on digitally since I bought my mark II when it first came out. Didn't know if the higher mega pixel 4/3 cameras of today were able out perform my now (5?) year old DSLR.

I still would like to have a small digital like the Ep1/2 or the GF1. I never casually carry the Mark II anymore due to it's size. It's now dedicated to strictly purpose driven photography, and that's not very often.

I can't comment on the DSLR/m43 IQ question, except to say I stopped using my Nikon film SLR for similar reasons and switched to RF's. Just bought a GF1 to complement those as digital is convenient to use at times. I bought the zoom lens kit which is fine for what I wanted to do with the GF1, but for "casual carry" I'd recommend going for the fixed 20/1.4 of the GF1. The zoom is still too bulky but as I have a Bessa with the 40/1.4 lens my "casual carry" needs are already met.

You definitely have to go to Ubud and stay at least a few days in a small hotel in the rice fields there to listen to the bull frogs song. I personally recommend the Alam Indah in Ubud, but you have to book early...

Hi Haagen,

I would also recommend Ubud - it is where I photographed my monkeys in the R-D1 thread. It is a little more relaxed than the major tourist centres.

I stayed in a beautiful villa in Sanur which is about 35 mins from Denpasar. It had a private pool and courtyard. We booked it last moment and got it for about $150 Aus per day at http://www.baliemeraldvillas.com/rentals.html

What you do depends on what sort of tourist you are. I went there after a three week working holiday in Europe and just wanted to chill. Meals are VERY cheap averaging $5 AUS in good restaurants.

The people in Bali are beautiful and easy going but be prepared to be hassled to death in the street for your business whether that is offers to drive you around or to buy the ubiquitous 'Bin Tang' T-shirt. To them you are the 'cash cow'. This was my only disappointment in Bali. Just learn to say 'Tidak' which is no.

Great photos.
I was there last summer - super place, super people. I would like to go back. We also stayed in Sumar, very relaxed no issues walking about with cameras. Like John says .. sometimes you have to say 'no' or else you may get more than you bargained for !!!
Some places have Black sand, others white. Elephants, monkeys, temples and beautiful sunsets .. rice fields wonderful horse riding .. everything a good tourist needs.
