Other Areas E U R O M E E T - 2013, early discussion...

There was another thread started with Euromeet questions, see HERE, but this one here already has some more discussion in it, so maybe we can keep this one alive.

Regarding the timing of the trip, is there a reason why 27/28 April is a particularly good idea, or some other weekend? We would be looking at some time around then so do people have children's school vacations (etc. etc.) which they have to plan around? If so, when?

In the other thread I voted for Vienna / Bratislava.

Incidentally on April 27th I have to be in Vienna in order to take an examination at University:)

If for whatever reason Bratislava will make it - I will be glad to join - I have studied there :)

Granada is great tip too, although I think that Alhambra would not be optimal for a 'group' visit - one may need to get the tickets in advance. Once we are in Spain I would also add Seville.

Lisbon is a very interesting city too, but so is Porto.

.. this is going to be a tough choice ... ;)

As a sort of 'useful thread bump', may I suggest that we have a couple of questions to answer quite soon (in order to get the cheapest travel and accommodation!) . . .

WHEN:
April or May might be thought of as usual for the Euromeets. There are holidays in most European countries in connection with Easter. On the other hand, everyone travels on that weekend (especially those with families, even in RFF) so we should probably choose another. Plus Easter Monday is on 1st.April - so in any case that might be a bit early.

WHERE:
The big question. General thoughts would be along the lines of somewhere we can get to fairly sensibly, find cheap-and-cheerful accommodation, that is photographically interesting, decent transport and perhaps has several RFF-ers around. Slightly off-peak (less crowded and much cheaper) tourist or cultural centres have previously met these requirements. Putting this lot together, probably the chosen location should be in Europe (Timbuktu might be interesting, but . . .).

So, are there people who would like to go but have a weekend when it is impossible? Are there people who prefer a specific weekend?

Do we want 'old' atmosphere, or crazy newness? Do we mind about the weather, or perhaps everyone wants only to visit museums and galleries this year?

Let's have some feedback and see if we can tempt Kully to go along after all.
;)

EDIT: We have all been typing simultaneously!

I just tried to find reasonable flights to Reykjavik - it is cheaper to go to Tokyo. Maybe Iceland is out of the picture for me (though Tokyo will come up later for me anyway, with any luck).

Beirut would be more do-able, and has good travel options as I would have to go via Istanbul :)

Prague also seems interesting and historic and so on.

How about the Baltic states in the Spring? Umbrellas needed?

In the warmer bits of Europe there have been some suggestions already. Lisbon? Grenada? Sicily?

Almost forgot, the Dutch "Queen's Day" (the official birthday of Queen Beatrix, not a gay-parade) is Tuesday 30th. April. If anyone is curious about Dutch people behaving strangely, then Amsterdam would be a good place to visit then.

Regarding the time, I am fairly flexible - but the closer it gets to a chosen date, the harder spare time is to arrange. That's probably true for everyone of course.

In order to get a bit of decision making underway, here is a list of the countries and cities/towns suggested so far.

After reading through and adding a couple more locations and comments, perhaps we could do a vote during next week, maybe with three points for first-choice and one point for alternate-choice? Jamais has even found a web-app which can do run this sort of reader-poll, but probably(?) we have few enough voters and choices to get by manually.

And of course, the question of exactly when the trip is to take place also needs to be settled! ;)

I don't see me being able to afford a flight ticket anyway but then my heart is aching not to see Turkey - İstanbul on the list.

We went to Istanbul last Spring as a group, but there is no reason why you could not go there. The flight tickets are cheap and easy to book, the accommodation is no problem. If one saves 25 or 30 euros a week between now and the Spring you get yourself a week, pretty much. I think most people who went to Istanbul last year want to go back, and for longer. Simon will be there for half of this year, for example.

Hey Martin,

I have an already planned trip to Greece with my wife between 20 ant 23rd April.

We are planning to visit two cities, Thessaloniki and Athens. If the meeting takes place at that weekend in Greece, I would love to attend.

And if the meeting will take place at another time (in May I hope) to another city I will try my best to attend anyway but not promise.

Alkis; if you read this, I assume that you would make a list about the places that we should visit in your beautiful country. We met in mine last year's meeting and hope to have a beer with you in yours :)

Simon; if you read this, when you come to Istanbul, I believe you will need to be introduced to the cheap film and dark room supplies sellers. So just inform us and we can meet you. Taylan already offered you his darkroom I think, so just don't forget to bring your cameras along :)

Hope to meet you guys all.

Greetings.

i will bring a little stack of tri-x but yes, i'm going to need to buy film somewhere at some point. see you soon!

Hey Martin,

Thanks for your work in preparing that list. Looking forward to seeing the vote re: everybody's opinions - on place, and time.

On the trip last year there seemed to be a good selection of film upstairs in that place on Ankara Cd, just up from the tram stop. I got a load of Pan400 there, but Tri-X was also stocked I think. Actually, I think Simon was there at the time so this is probably a pointless post, oops.

I'd vote for Barcelona! Istanbul is great too!

Ooops - we have just been to those interesting cities in the last few years. Istanbul needs a whole year just on it's own, but we might stretch the generosity of our Turkish colleagues if we go back en-masse . . .

Perhaps there is a new location to add to the list?

In fact, it looks as though so far Istanbul (again) and Prague are most popular, with Sarajevo (the early favourite) having slipped slightly.

If we can discuss/edit the list of locations in the next few days then we could do a vote with 'favourite' and 'alternate' choices. That leaves us still to choose the weekend of course . . .

For reference, here are the previous Euromeet locations:-

2007 - Paris
2008 - Berlin
2009 - Barcelona
2010 - Florence
2011 - London
2012 - Istanbul

Martin, you are making an effort here to make the meet happen, so here is my suggestion that might help.

As the time to take the decision is here, I would suggest to to make a poll that would include either 12 (that is max AFAIK) of countries - OR if that is not enough - up to 12 group of countries and let those that actually plan to attend to vote. Allow multiple selection. Then take the top few and make a new poll with cities. Unfortunately, based on the final decision there will always be RFFers that would be able to attend the meet in city A, but not in city B.

Thank you for trying to organize the meet - I hope I will be able to attend - it would be my first time.

In the other thread I voted for Scotland, ..but Ireland would be ok too. I don't mind if we don't have sun all the time, makes it more provocative I guess. ...

I'm still on film only, don't know whether I'll be back on digital then, but who cares....
