eBay deadline for sellers--No longer using Paypal; Problem registering

Way too much personal information for sh_ty company as eBay is.
SIN was never required for buy and sell.
https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/programs/sin/protect.html

As much as I want to sell things, here is no way I will give my SIN to some known to be troublesome company registered in Amsterdam.

I'm really surprised apparatchiks from EU are not pit-bulling those buggers.

eBay is registered in Amsterdam, rather than in the USA? Or also registered in Amsterdam? Canada?

"Apparatchicks?" What are they? I'll take a guess: Gearheads?

with PayPal you have to pay taxes on any amount received -totaling for a calendar year over $20,000
there is some transaction number you exceed also. -- that is part of that limit level
then you have to file and pay income tax on your total -- both fed & state -- so you need to keep records to determine profit on sales
if you stay under $20,000 in sales activity-- then no document from PayPal

for the new service ---I assume they are asking for your social security number so they can generate a tax document to you ( don't know if there is a grace amount before that happens )
for a cancelled check you write void with a sharpie boldly over the pay to and amount areas
don't sign it its just for the numbers .and bank details
the payment system is European based - eBay is still in the us I believe

honestly with the changes -- I think I will pass on this wonderful opportunity to save .5% on fees

Pay system eBay is pushing on users instead of PayPal is Amsterdam registered. Typical for shady organization. Uber eats was stealing money from our bank account and it is Uber Amsterdam. Not surprised. If it is ok with bordels and dope it is ok with shady businesses.

Apparatchik is Cold War word. Then Biden meet Kosigin back then they were both apparatchiks.

When I started using Ebay and PayPal, I opened an un-linked, bank account, to do my transactions through, so I would no check one day and find a buyer had made a complaint and my regular, day to day Bank Account be frozen or raided.

I was thinking about dropping that account, as it is a $5 a month fee that sometimes goes unused for months at a time, but with this news, I'll keep it as is and use it, should it come to that, for Ebay's new monies grab.

There is time to delay, to see if the new system has any bugs to clear up, as the article linked in another post above, states that PayPal will remain an option until 2023.

Godspeed and Best Health to everyone here.

eBay seems to be cutting Paypal out of the selling process. They now require sellers to provide their bank and social security info directly to eBay, similar to the way it is with Paypal.

So, OK, if that's what they want (I guess). But when I tried to register, it wouldn't take my bank info. The same info as Iv'e been using for years, and I know it's right.

Not only that, but they set a deadline, and they threaten to not let us list any items after the deadline, which is today. Seems like corporate suicide.

Has any one else had this problem?

Is anyone else bothering to register?

Has anyone had success?

Is it even a good idea to register for the change?

Back when I did business on ebay they wanted access to my checking account data. I'd set up a separate account for my ebay stuff. I read a story about ebay freezing a business account over a dispute. Several months after doing a fair amount of buying and selling, with no issues, my banker told me, ebay requested, from my bank not me, info on both my business and personal accounts. I never told ebay about these accounts. The business account is a DBA. So, they snooped and didn't advise me of the request. If not for my banker asking my permission, i wouldn't have known. I refused.

Once paypal was running, i began using pay pal. Being a photographer, i often took for sale items into the studio for photos. ebay wanted access to my library of stock product images. I refused. Months later, ebay contacted me, wanting to send a representative to my place of work or home to observe my technique in putting an item up for auction. They offered me $100 in payment for the process. I told them my time was worth $1k/hr. If they were willing to pay that, we should talk. I heard nothing.

In my work, i was in a meeting where our client, a very big software co, hosted about 40 favored vendors for a new product preview. Among them were names like UPS, Fed-X Union Bank, Adobe, etc. Many were from SilValley. These were all business Execs. 3 presentations were made by Cos who had used the new software. I don't remember the first but, the second was ebay. The ebay people took the stage and they were booed by about 100+ people in the room. I couldn't believe it. These folks were all wearing $3000 suits and booing ebay like they were the bad guy in a phony TV wrestling match. Once the booing stopped, ebay gave their presentation.

I quit using ebay years back. They are far too snoopy for me.

A few years ago (maybe still) eBay started courting sellers who had increasing volumes of sales. It sounds like you may have been one of them. During the "Great Recession" I subsisted partly on a tiny business selling mostly on eBay, and it was mildly successful. I suppose eBay noticed that, as they sometimes actually called me on the phone to talk to me (nicely) "about my business".

Never trusting eBay, I wondered what they were actually up to. I finally figured out that their plan was to force the more successful small sellers (and I'm sure I was just one of many) into a higher volume tier requiring the use of an eBay Store and other products they had. This offered more flexibility as far as listing restrictions and procedures, but in short, came with significantly higher fees. The only way to cover the cost of the higher fees was to raise prices and work much hard to sell items - not easy to do! Thus their plan was basically higher revenue for eBay and more treading water for the seller to stay afloat.

Why was this forced? Well it was forced, because at that time they also instituted a policy that anyone with more than 40 eBay listings per month had to start paying significant fees to list items as well as a variety of other gamed, mostly intentionally obscured restrictions that made it difficult for a small volume seller to make any sort of a profit. It was a real squeeze. It takes much more than 40 listings at one time to really make a go at making money on eBay, even just to supplement ones income. The effective choice given to small sellers, was to either go much bigger and try to gen up more revenue for eBay, or get out. I just folded up shop and did other things to pay the bills. I still sell there occasionally, but just personal stuff.

I'm actually losing my ebay.de account because I sold too much last year, and they're forcing me to upgrade to a business account which I refuse. I'm cycling through gear, all profits go towards new gear purchases.. I'm not about to pay 20% tax just for my G.A.S. :D

I had the same issue a few years back, in the same context of "cycling through gear" as you so well put it.

At the time I did manage to get in contact with an human by chat and I did explain it was not the exact same gear I was buying and selling, but similar newer/older models. Sometimes it really was the same, but after a relatively long period, when I actually used it. I succeeded in making this clear to him/her and so we could sort it (still took a while after the initial chat).

That person did casually mention something important that was probably (not confirmed by him/her) what caused this to be triggered: my listings pictures "looked like a shop" as I was "using professional photos" (it was just a simple white paper background and bounced light with an old Olympus E-PL1). Ever since then I take the pics of my gear for sale on an old wooden table and with my phone...

I never had problems since then. Could this be the same issue happening to you?

I tried again. Entering my bank user name and password still didn't work. It works fine when I go to my bank's website to check my account; but never works when going through the eBay channel. This time they offered a way to enter the requested info manually. I tried it, and it appeared to work. I even got an email telling me that I was all set. Then I got two emails telling me I wasn't all set. Apparently it didn't really work.

I wish they would just forget the whole thing.

Ebay's Managed Payments has been rolling out for two years. My opinion is that 50% hate it and 50% are okay. No one loves it. I've been on it for about 4 months and I haven't had any problems. They are very good about telling you when a payment has cleared and that it's okay to ship. I chose the weekly payment option and the payment goes out on Tuesday and is in my account on Wednesday.
The only thing that bugs me a little is the way they handle International Standard Delivery shipping charges. About half of my shipments (all photo gear) go overseas. That amounts to 5-6 shipments a day. On domestic shipping the cost of the label comes right out of my account. On international they pay me the shipping charges and then bill me 7-10 days later. It creates a lot of extra work to justify the two amounts.
If your concern is privacy the best option is to do what others have suggested. Open a separate account just for Ebay payments.

I finally just uploaded a scanned blank deposit slip, and after a couple of days it was accepted. The same information was on the slip (name, account number, routing number) as what I had entered manually several times without success. What a crappy process.

I decided against sharing my sicial security data with ebay. If I won't be able to sell on ebay anymore (and I've been selling there for over 10 years), so be it. I don't understand why would they need somebody's social security number...

Ebay is, and has been, harvesting info, profiles, on both buyers and sellers for years. My guess is, they both use and sell this info.

Ebay is an angry money machine. Angry because, when they saw Amazon and tried to copy them, they failed big time. Being local to these people, they openly talked about becoming another Amazon. In my experience, ebay treats both its sellers and buyers miserably. Amazon, like them or not, seems to treat buyers well. I don't know how sellers/vendors are treated. I would never entertain selling through ebay as a product vendor. I don't trust them. Their employees don't trust them, it seems.

Their peers in SilValley dislike them and, are public about it. Meg screwed up the Co and, it never recovered.

Agreed. There is 0% chance I am giving eBay my SSN and dob. It’s going to be a smaller market.
