I bought this with the intention that my 11 yr old nephew could come along on photographic excursion with me, and shoot film as all the cool kids are doing now (I am serious, the kids in his school are into film).

The ebay ad said "great condition, no visible scratches..". Needless to say, I've started the return process.

And some lens fungus in the lens that came with it, and was described as like new!

I've bought lots of stuff off ebay, and have been very satisfied on the whole. But ever so often...
😉

Frigging eBay sellers ... some of them aren't about to let the facts get in the way of a sale! 😱

Result. After an email claiming the camera was in good shape when it was sent to me (!) he/she issued a full refund, apologized, and said no need to ship it back.
After further examination I also noticed the lens release button was jammed in, the meter dead, drying marks on the pressure plate. Eeesh.
It's going in the trash.

Keep it for parts?

That sucks! Even as seller, they should at least avoid headaches and describe everything. I'm not sure why some people still try to get away by seller gear that's not as described. eBay is always a hit or miss....

Thanks for the suggestions for cameras. I have a bunch of full manual ones that he could use, I just thought that one that had an auto exp setting would be good for this trip, then I could explain to him exposure etc to see if he's into it.

I don't want to offer the camera for parts, because the funky strong moldy smell (and evidence in the lens) suggests that it will just infect someone else's camera with fungus.

Yes, that looks like trash to me. Sad to see, but it happens.

With money back, no need to return, you got a satisfactory outcome. Some sellers just don't know and copy the over promises made by others. I've encountered that a few times, and the sellers were courteous about their mistake and gave refunds. eBay's policies now favor the buyer in any dispute. That can help in cases like this.

One thing I noticed, after I got the refund, is that the serial numbers on the camera and the lens did not match those in the photos of the ebay ad.
So now I think the seller knew what he had was trash, but used someone else's images and tried to pass it off to a sucker. Thing is, even if you had absolutely no idea about cameras you would know this was broken.
And the net outcome for the seller was that he was out $12 that it cost to ship it.

This is the ebay ad #, which you can use to pull it up:

271734945576

You can see in the third photo the serial number is 512XXXX, while in my photo at the top of this thread shows the serial # 53023XXX
