EI 3200: please suggest

this is neopan 1600 pushed to 6400. developed in Xtol in 1+1 dilution.
contax g2 with 90mm lens.

I was in the band backing the show. 🙂

I took a couple of band shots using Delta 3200, Tri X 400 and Delta 400 all at 3200. Developer is DD-X.
Btw these are all 35mm, it shows the difference between the three different films and what you want or can achieve with either.

Right: Rodinal is more permissive especially in the not too high range of temperature... For DDX you should control recommended temperature carefully, as with most developers... Good luck!

If you're OK with using colour film, the new Portra 400 seems to go to 3200 remarkably well:

No, it actually looks pretty good. The shadows are full of detail, some of which I let go back in this photo because I liked the dramatic light. The contrast is slightly higher than a normally developed normal film like Tri-X but less contrasty than a 400 film pushed to 1600.

Well, I skip the 3000, and shoot it at 200...😛

Just thinking of underexposing color film four stops below its optimal rating, makes me feel... anguish!

No one suggested underexposing it, someone mentioned a 3 stop push.

I hate D3200. I've tried it, it's awful. Both Tim and Chris' examples of Kodak TMZ are some of the best I've seen and it looks good, but at 1600 I think Neopan is sharper and with less grain. Since we're talking MF then Neopan is now irrelevant.

I'm not sure what I'd try.

These too look great. Did you meter and shoot all of these the same way? The two tri-X shots are the only two I even find usable.

Man, I would have expected better than that grain-wise from 6x9. What did you develop in and scan on?

I had the photos developed and scanned by NCPS.

I've good results with Delta 3200 shot at 3200 and developed with TMAX, grain was nearly as fine as hp5 rated at 1600.

I've used Ilford Delta 3200 developed in Ilfotec DD-X with reasonably good results. Tried Kodak TMX400 out to 3200 once, and it was a bit more contrasty.

Alternative would be Fuji Provia 400X pushed 3 stops, though I would suggest adding 2/3 to 1 exposure compensation. Tried it once at EI6400 for a jazz concert, but the grain becomes noticeable. I would suggest using an 82A or 82B filter; an 80A would be too much blue. Stage lighting seems to be best with the 82A.

I've shot Provia 400X in 35mm at 3200 and it is unusable for my purposes. From what I've seen the new Kodak Portra 400 is the way to go. It had beat or at least matched Provia 400X in sharpness and push-ability while maintaining a truer color palette.

For me...
Tmax P3200 @ IE 3200 processed in XTOL or TMax developers in 35mm.
Ilford Delta 3200 @ ie 3200 processed in DDX developer for medium format.
