I've noticed one strange thing with my Electro 35. If I set the focus distance to the shortest it will go (i.e. beyond 0.8m/ 2.6 ft and up against the stop), then if I cock the shutter and press the shutter release it fires normally. If I advance the film a second time (with the focus distance still at 0.8m) the shutter fires as the advance lever returns. Pressing the shutter release then has no effect as the shutter is not cocked.

Then on subsequent winds it continues to fire on the return stroke and stays like this until I move the focus distance to just greater than 0.8m/2'. As I move the focus ring past that setting there's a 'click' and then the normal wind/fire sequence is restored.

Can anyone suggest what is wrong with my camera?

wow, i have never heard of this kind of problem before..
i did have a pentax slr that fires up when the advance lever is wound.. but top it up with the focusing thingy, i am not sure, then.. it could be something got stuck up somewhere between the shutter mechanism and the focusing ring, because you mentioned about the click..

Just a WASG, but maybe someone has been in there before, and now you have a wire (say to the shutter solenoid) that is intermitantly shorting out because it is being pushed around by the lens. When you move the focus, it breaks the short, the solenoid closes (the click), and the cycle is restored.

Not much of a way to tell what is happening unless you tear it down, and watch the actions of all the movements.
