Elite Chrome Discontinued

quote:
Kodak actively evaluates its professional film portfolio on a routine basis to ensure it's consistent with customer demands; decisions regarding product discontinuations are largely based on customer demand and sales.

Damn!
Not only do they take our candies, but they insist on making us feeling guilty about it :bang::bang:

Unfortunately, the percentage of the "who cares!" population heavily outweighs the discerning, caring crowd.

SnapperUK - I get my film processed at GenieImaging - C41,E6, 35 or 120 all same price at £2.39 per roll. Bought a 25 rolls Elitetoday @less than £3.50 roll going to India in New Year. Might try Agfa, though I had a bad experience in the past. 100G is nice but sooo expensive.

It's only a matter of time before we're sitting around remembering Tri-X ... I'm really starting to believe this! 🙁

I have little faith in Kodak sorry and have just made the move to Ilford HP5+.

Not hard to foresee a day when rolls of film are being auctioned off on e-b*y for $$$.

The rising price of colour film will be a self inflicted death sentence IMO!

We all predicted that colour film would be the first terminal casualty of the digital age but this seems to be picking up speed!

Right as I fall in love with Portra 400, too. Hopefully C41 emulsions will be around for a while yet, as they are a bit more 'consumer-friendly' than positive films.
Either way, feels bad, man. 🙁

Dammit kodak. Those luscious greens, beautiful blues, perfectly balanced...it was my new favorite. There should be no reason for this, but apparently there is. Gonna have to buy a few more 5 packs before it's gone.

Funny that the "Extra color" version doesn't appear to be discontinued on kodak's website. Have a couple rolls of that waiting to go, will see how it is, but I doubt it's any better.

I don't really get the idea of switching to something else pre-emptively. If I find something I love, I'm gonna keep using it until I can't anymore. I suppose I also don't identify my images and style as closely with any particular emulsion, other than what I think looks best. Clearly, it's a lot more personal to others out there.

As for provia...I've used it in 120, and I gotta say, it's no Elitechrome.

Just saw this on another site.

Just when I thought I could rely on this film for 35mm as I love the results, similar to 100G but half the price I was wishing they would make it 120 size. With no Sensia no other options really, not keen on Provia. Also in UK Fuji have increased their prices for E6 to almost Kodak levels. Just got some Fuji 400X, nice film, 120 size for £18 at Mailshots dated to May '12, £24 plus at other suppliers.

I love E6 , shoot in preference to negative and can get it processed at less than £2.50 a roll 35 or 120, so not expensive, but getting worried now. Tried Ektar but found it horrible, difficult to scan, blue shadows, weird balance.

Even if I stock up on Elite what after?

Well, there are some options:

1. Ektachrome E100G: The most similar film to Elitechrome 100. Grain, sharpness, resolution are identical. The only difference is Elitechrome 100 being a bit warmer.
Use E100G with a 1A Skylight filter and you have 99% of Elitechrome 100 color.

2. Fuji Provia 100F: Also same detail rendition, but color balance is more neutral / a bit cooler than E100G and Elitechrome 100.
Use it with an 1B Skylight or similar weak warm filter and you have about 95% of the color rendition of Elitechrome 100.

3. EliteChrome 100 ExtraColor (or E100VS): Yes, more intensive colors, but also with a warm balance like Elitechrome 100 and quite good skin tones. Excellent film often overlooked by photographers.

4. AgfaPhoto CT Precisa 100: Very cheap alternative (not from quality, but price):
5 rolls cost only 14,99€ in Germany for example. Cheaper than most color negative films.

5. Voigtländer V-Chrome 100: only 2,65€ per film.

I will use E100G, Elitechrome ExtraColor / E100VS, Provia 100F and the excellent Provia 400X (also often overlooked, excellent all-around film) in the future.

I will stay with slides. It's unsurpassed in quality. I neither can get that with negative film nor digital.
Slide film is a unique medium.
And slide projection is by far the best in color photography. Digital beamers completely suck in direct comparison: Ridicoulus low resolution and bad color rendition. Absolutely overpriced crap.

And even with the higher price of E100G compared to Elitechrome 100: For me shooting slide film is cheaper than color negative: Color negative makes only sense with prints, quality prints from a good lab. And isn't cheap. The total cost of CN film + prints at my good minilab here in my town is higher than E100G with E6 development and slide frames (I do framing by my own).
If you only look at film or developing prices, you get a wrong picture. You have to consider the costs of the whole package.

And by the way: With slide projection I easily get an extremely brillant, super sharp high resolution picture of 1m x 1,5m on my screen. For only some cents per picture.
With color negative I would have to pay dozens of Euros for that (and then even the quality would be not on the same level).

Cheers, Jan

Hi Jan, A quick search of the web reveals no American sellers of these 2 films, and very few result overall. (I'm afraid I don't read German so well and the rainforest site sells 3 for $30 on V-chrome). If you know of any, would you mind sharing any American sellers of these films?

I think a lot of companies are dropping their low margin products Kodak, Fuji, Honda, Ford, you name it all sorts of 'entry' level products are being dropped. These companies are making decisions to sell high margin goods and if they maintain a selection of 'entry level' products the consumer will choose these as an option to the high margin products. So it's simple. Drop the low margin items and the consumer will have no choice but to purchase the high margin goods.

I'm not cynical. Well maybe a bit.

Well, the film market in Germany seems to be much better compared to North America: More supply, more distributors, lower prices.

I know that Lomography is offering AgfaPhoto CT Precisa in North America. But their prices are higher.

I suggest send AgfaPhoto an email and ask for North American distributors:
http://www.agfaphoto.com/appc/conte...D=193789&dbc=9d19968771dc6b8cd04beec85eded616

And ask B&H, Adorama, Freestyle, Four Corner Store, Ultrafineonline (they have at least the AgfaPhoto CN films), Calumet about ordering this film.
If they see there is demand, they probably will take it in stock.

Same with Voigtländer: Ask them about their distribution partners in North America:

Yay! I just procured 50 rolls for a mere 3 € per roll. Expiration date 03/2013. They're going straight into the freezer! :-D (I know, I should've bought 500 right away, but that would've busted my budget ...)
