Hi Friends,

Have just bought a lovely Elmar 50mm f2.8 screw mount lens; it is my 1st Leica lens, please can you tell me the right lens hood which will let me see the aperture settings?

Thanks a lot,

John W

The IROOA lens hood is also appropriate for the Elmar 50. It doesn't have the vents of the later 12585 but I prefer it because it looks better (IMO). 🙂

Reviving this old thread to hopefully get an answer to my question. I realized the other day that I can't use my standard rear cap on the Elmar when it is collapsed. Is there a deeper rear cap to use with these retractable lenses?

I seem to remember other lenses (21/24mm?) that also have a protruding rear element, what cap do you use on them? Storing my Elmar un-collapsed all the time kind of takes the edge of it's compactness...

I cut a used plastic film can off at the appropriate length as a rear cap for my Elmar f2.8 50. Not every film can works, but you probably have one or two lying around. Just try different ones until you get the right size. Ultimate cheap accessory.

I wonder if you could use a short LTM extension tube with your existing cap to simulate a deep cap. Have just been looking at an old 25mm tube and it should work. How far does the Elmar extend back when it's collapsed?

IIRC, about 1/2" or just over 1cm, measured from the bayonet.

I tried the film canister trick yesterday with an old Tri-X canister and although it fits, it was slightly too tight and putting it on/off the lens created a number of small plastic filaments that I'd rather not have inside my lens. I'll see later today if I can find a more suitable canister.

A 25mm LTM extension tube with cap on the back end measures about 23mm from the front flange to where it narrows down, almost identical to my 3f body. It should work like a charm and serve as a deep cap for your collapsed Elmar.

The tube I have is made by Canon, but am sure Leitz ones will work the same.

I just took a quick look at a 2.8 Elmar on RitzCollectibles site: it appears that the aperture is set by a knurled ring located behind the front filter mount, therefore the aperture should remain adjustable with a hood installed, unlike to earlier Elmars that had the little tab on the front of the lens... ?

Lately, I have been using a Leitz "barndoor" hood (marked "Summicron") on all my 50mm lenses: S-cron, Summar, and 3.5 Elmar. My little trick for mounting on the A-36 "push-on lenses" is to install the Leitz A-36 to E-39 filter adapter on the lens, then clip the barndoor onto the filter adapter... works pretty well.

I also use the same filter adapter to mount a cast Heavystar hood on my 90 & 135 mm Leitz lenses.

I've been looking for both a FIKUS (50/90/135 telescoping) and the hood that allows you to set the aperture on the front-set Elmars, but they've been running pretyty expensive on evil-bay...

Ritzcollectibles a has a fair selection of Leica Hoods, if you want to go window-shopping...

Speaking of FIKUS, I just bought a FIKUS that reads Elmar 5, 9 and 13.5, but it's too small for my Elmar 50. Are there two different Elmar 50mm sizes? The FIKUS fits the Hektor 135.

I think I found my answer, it fits the Elmar 50/3.5 not the 2.8, I guess I'll sell it.
