Elmar-M 50mm 2.8 II

I'm awfully tempted to pick one up for my m3 ds, but since I have a 50/2 hex, I just dont think I need it. Still want one though.

Buy it and suddenly your M3 fits in a coat pocket.

I used to carry mine in my back pocket, back when I was young and my arse wasn't so fat.

It has been a go to lens for years now for me. Also have the 90 4.0 macro which make a stunning combination.

They work well on both film and M8 & 9.

I have a question on the ergonomics: does the lens have any locking mechanism?

My cheapish copy's barrel rotates freely after being extended, which makes changing aperture quite annoying. Does it suppose to do this?

The Elmar version I does rotate. The more modern version II does not.

Hi,

Simple answer; adjust the aperture then release the infinity lock and focus. That's what the lock is for...

My apology if there's any misunderstanding: mine's the later modern version. Which has no infinity lock, of course.

My question is when fully extended, does it suppose to have some friction so you are not rotating the barrel while changing apertures? If so mine's may need service, as it has no resistance at all.

I have the elmar-M and had a chance to buy the current 50mm summicron for a very good price. After using the 'cron for a while I sold it and kept the elmar.
The elmar-M is a beautiful lens, under-rated and now discontinued.
It is very sharp even a F2.8, and the images have a soul that I felt the 'cron lacked.
I also had the original elmar, which is a different animal in line with a summitar and the collapsible 'cron, both of which I have as well.
I never take a trip without my elmar-M.

Yes it locks , clockwise from front of camera. Pull it out and turn. Turn back, push in for storage.

Version 1 barrel rotates as you focus, version 2 does not.

No I did not see the lady with the hat. Stunning is it not.

The color rendition on the Elmar-M is excellent. I prefer it to the Summicron V. 3. For traveling it is very compact. I had a problem shooting quickly with it from the collapsed position. For summer/daylight southern latitudes it is excellent. F2.8 is fast enough. There were times that even with ISO film I had to push the shutter speed up.

Just got this lens for a weekend and now waiting for some results. really nice and interesting ergonomics too..

This lens is truly great. I only shoot B&W, and there it certainly shines. I think the main point about it, is the right type of contrast/sharpness/bokeh combination. There is also very little flare to speak about.
