I have a copy of the third version, with a filter size of 49mm. JDOS has the 2nd version, recently purchased for his MP. Let's hope he sees this thread too. 🙂

Bob... I find it a bit difficult to work with because I got too used to the width you get from the 35mm. However, it's truly great to see all you can get in a single shot!
My lens had a bit of separation (sent today for repair) in the rear element. Otherwise, the focusing throw is reasonably wide, the lens is very sharp and... what can I say? Probably the only problem we'll have is that the barrel does protrude too much into the VF, especially with the hood on.
As for problems that can occur in all RF lenses... mine has never flared or given internal reflections. Still need to work on it to gauge the bokeh quality, but at least in regards to sharpness... no complains!

I had the second version until I sold it last year. It was a nice sharp lens. Well made and a bit on the heavy side. I recently picked up an screw mount Summaron which is much more compact and easy to carry around but it's an older design and not as sharp. In my younger days I had the first version which was a good lens too.

Hi Bob,
I have one and its a very good lens and the distortion is well controlled. If you are buying one, try to get the hood as the hood on its own is pretty pricey and can be diffcult to find. The first and second version elmarits are considered collectibles so from a price perspective the later versions might be better value for money. My two cents.

True! Distortion in these lenses isn't as noticeable as it is, say, in the Nikon 24-84 f3.5-4.5 lens, which at the wider end shows considerable barrel-ly views.

i have and use the 3rd version. it is a stunning performer, even though it is pretty large on the camera. its not that its heavy, just sticks out pretty far in front.
i go back and forth between the elmarit and the cv 28/3.5 which is tiny in comparison, and even though slower, it too performs really well.

Thanks for all the relies so far. We will have to see what the asking price is and then decide why I just should not go for the VC 28/3.5 instead.

I have one and have had a first generation many years ago. I've had this one for about ten years but have rarely used it. It performs very well but my personal likes are not in the 28mm range. I use it on my M6 but find the frame lines to crop about 10-15%. I generally used the finder and tolerate the distortion. The 28 had good contrast and low flare and is sharp even at the edges and very good wide open.
