English Suburbia 2 (Kodachrome 64)

Hiya,

I'm still working away on my project to photograph Milton Keynes in South East England. At the moment I'm still working on the landscape phase of the project and there is a lot more for me to process but basically, these aren't the people shots/street photography shots that I have planned for the project. In the end the two will be intermingled as I am aware that landscapes can look very empty and lonely sometimes all by themselves, particularly in an urban/suburban landscape which thronged with people.

All were shot on a Leica M2, Voigtlander Ultron 35mm, Kodachrome 64.

I know urban landscapes aren't everybody's cup of tea but at this project is progressing, I'm eager to share it, because there's nothing worse in my view than photos being couped up and never seen.

A worthwhile project Vicky, I'd like to see more in the future.

I remember MK from 30 years ago when I used to visit it a lot on business. It was still very much work in progress then of course, but I remember meeting an employee of the Development Corporation near two large brightly coloured warehouses, one red the other yellow. He told me that they were painted those colours so that, from a distance, they looked like a field of poppies and a field of oilseed rape. Of course, for the people who lived close by they looked crap, but hey, town planning has to see the bigger picture 🙄

They are indeed but they will firmly be on the last page of the book I produce? Why? I'm certain that it's down to them that many people get the impression its a concrete jungle (it's the thing to say of MK, especially when you've never been it seems with those I mention the project to) -- I have some shots already of them, there are two sets, copies in Bancroft just north of H3 (Monks Way) and the original Liz Leyh cows in Midsummer Place (between Saxon Gate and on the old Midsummer Blvd.)

Thanks! The cows are indeed there (see above) -- I think its a worthwhile project, some people think I've gone even more cuckoo but I'm fascinated by the place. It's not pefect as the project will show, but there are so many things done right in MK that other towns and cities will miss out on due to either misunderstanding or worse still, snobbish aversion.

That I hadn't heard about, interesting little fact that isn't in anything I have read about MK and MKDC (and I have read a lot! *sad innit!*) -- there are so many industrial units on the fringes now that they bear more resemblance to aircraft hangers than regional/national distribution centres. But, even though they are quite oppressive, at least the city is designed for them and doesn't dump heavy goods vehicles onto residential streets a la, lets say, hmm, Worthing 🙂

Thanks! The problem I have is that I have a £5 crappy dell CRT, it's quite good (you can get a lot of CRT for no money at all, Trinitron 19" in my case) but I have to say on LCDs the colours do sometimes go off the scale. Also scanning Kodachrome on a 10 year 8bit per channel Nikon Coolscan isn't ideal but it's chugging along.

There's plenty more to come 🙂
