EP1 disappointment

After defending to the best of my abilities the EP1 at the thread about David Poque's malicious commentary, I wonder if there is something to learn from the RFF folks who went to buy the EP1 and are now dissapointed with their choice. What happened?

Cheers,
Ruben

By the way, I forgot to mention again, that the new Panasonic is imitating the EP1 external contours and lack of EVF - So this adds even more to the possibility that dissapointment with the EP1 is rather RFF inwards.

But on the other hand I do not believe we are dumb. So something has happened here. What ?

Cheers,
Ruben

I'm still reeling from the revelation that my Kiev 4s weren't the uber-reliable photo tools that I'd hoped they would be. Please don't try to make me graudate to digital disappointment Ruben!*

it's NOT OK. SOme of that "Contac or something like that " CONTAX cameras are worth 10 times of what he offered, plus the 21mm lens again a lot more, depending on exact type and working condition.
ake some shots with your "Olly" of that old Contax and post them here and we'll tell you ;)

It likely has to do with advertising promising a Silver Bullet for photographers, and lots of people actually believing it. Nothing does everything well.

I was initially pretty stoked about the EP1. But after trying it in store, I realized it wouldn't allow me to ditch my dslr yet. The lack of viewfinder makes bright light composing difficult. The screen was a severe downgrade from my 900k dot screen. And the AF was lacking. I think the new panasonic may tick most of my boxes with a better screen, better AF, and accessory EVF. So I'm waiting for that or the EP2.

Whoosh...
I love the sound of jokes flying over my head.

Ahhhh, dunno guys...I think your selling the Pen somewhat short.....

I use the camera and it's mostly with the 17mm, (34mm) and now the finder.
The camera has a very nice comfortable feel to it. It sets up really well to almost any config you desire.

I have it so like this...

Lens reset....No
Fn button.....Screen off
AF @ AEL button
Sleep...........No

So, I'm using f11 for example at say ASA 400...(hate ISO)...
I focus at around 5 1/2'..(Hyper Focal)

Once focused at the AEL button, the camera will stay focused until you hit the button again to refocus....
I can walk for hours and just raise the camera to the eye, just like my Black Beauty...M4/35Lux or Cron......
The camera fires instantly...it has great power management.
The IQ is great but needs to be rediscovered once Adobe joins in and releases the update to LR and ACR.

The camera has brought to me the comfort zone of my M cameras, not the M8 either.....

It is very elegant to work with and to be honest...I have yet to read the manual. It's very intuitive......

Think about it....a digital camera with a great laid back feel, great IQ....responsive....
and interchangeable lens mount......

Maybe it ain't a Leica......but there's nothing closer......

I'll post a link to some street stuff with the camera. I'll update later after Adobe lets me process my images...

Later shooter

Would love to see some pics. This sounds like exactly how I'd use it. How do you set up the hyperfocus like that? Can you have a few preset hyperfocus settings?

Click on the image on my post before yours....it takes you to a gallery...at Webshots....

Anyway...RF shooters are the most ingenious...we need cameras to work the way we think....so...

At f11 the Hyper Focal distance is 5.64'
I am 6' tall, so if I hold the camera level with the ground and at about the bridge of my nose...it's at 5.6'...then I hit the AF with the AEL button and I'm at HF D. That gives me from Near Distance 2.82' to the Moon....

For other f stops I just walk the distance off and I'm good to go...

Here's the HF D for the camera with the 17mm, (34mm) lens....

F 16 4.01'
F 11 5.64'
F 8 7.96'
F 5.6 11.2'
F 4 15.9'
F 2.8 22.4 All in feet, sorry to those that still believe in Meters....

This is using a COC, (Circle Of Confusion) for this sensor of .015

I have been hitting every place I can to try to get a focus scale in the next firmware update. That would be just amazing...

.My friend is using just Leica Glass and his images have a very....
well great look that I couldn't get from a certain camera....That I sold twice.

I posted somewhere.... "The camera is certainly not for everyone. When the dust settles, serious users will be using the camera and other users will become serious when using the camera".

It's a classic and a no brainer if you come from the RF school of thought....

I think you've a good point here. The EP-1 is a little bit of everything, with features and in a form factor that can be interpreted in different ways. My problem is that I clearly remember my most enjoyable film camera experiences, and would like to recreate that joy again in digital. I foolishly think that I can go back in time by fitting FD lenses to an EP-1, but do I really expect to achieve anything more than a novelty use of some of my old lenses ?

Maybe I should view the EP-1 as a Kodak Retina, walk around with the 17mm Pancake, and be done with it.

I bought it and I'm not disappointed at all. In fact, I'm really enjoying it - mostly with my cv lenses. Quality is great and if I keep on buying cv lenses I can use them on my R-D1 as well.

After learning my craft in the late 70's with an OM1, it's great to have an 'Olly' again! I will be posting more soon.

Cheers,

I bought it too and I am using it with my Leica-M lenses and C.V. SWH MkII lens. Further I have the kit lenses 14-42mm and 17mm to use with AF. An EVF would be the perfect solution but I can live with the limitations and not a 5kEuro price for a digital camera (M8.2) which is also old fashioned within 4-5 years.
BTW it's my first digital camera.

extremely disappointed with E-P1

extremely disappointed with E-P1

when i first saw the orange wooden soap bar design study of the olympus µ4/3, i exactly knew: what a BS of a camera. what are they thinking?
so, i expected this camera to be for anyone but me.

after it finally materialized as E-P1 and i got my hands on it, i got deeply disappointed. all my expectations were immediately annihilated. now i'm willing to let go of all other digital camera (except the R-D1), only keeping the dPEN (and the R-D1, of course).

what a happy disappointment!

sebastian

Sebastian,
geeze, I feel so bad for you.
Just imagine a camera that disappoints that way...

Tsk, tsk... Whatever shall we do....

Glad your seeing with it....
