only thing I've heard of is the old clockwork driven self-timer that works through a short plunger in the cable release socket. I believe they are still available from Russia (?)
Otherwise, you'd have to build one with an actuator (from a modeling shop) and a computer with an A/D converter.
For long release, try an air-bulb cable release.

I think a lot of the cable acutuators will work. The self timer that I bought on ebay works good. And they are cheap $10-$15. You don't need the bottom female end (they are for leica). I love it.
