If one were going to buy an Epson R-d1, should he get an Epson R-d1(s) used or new with no warranty? At appears that the only way to buy a new one is from Japan which carries no USA warranty. Any advice?

Get the R-D1 from Matsuiyastore on eBay. They are first rate to deal with. Expect the rangefinder to need adjustment - they always do. I always had mine fixed on my own dime - faster that way.

I think that the R-d1's are way over priced. I'm always amazed that people pay 2000 bucks for a M-mount Nikon D70... When the used price dips to the $400 dollar level I'll buy one.

Perhaps because you don't have personal experience with those cameras.
I own both personally. Not the same beasts at all. The D70 is great for my job where i need to take accurate but not artistic images. But with Leica or even Minolta or CV lenses, the R-D1 is in another league. At the exception of the D3 or perhaps the D300 (not so sure) with Zeiss lenses, i don't see which Nikon could compete as far as image quality. Nikonian speaking 😉
BTW the D70 and the R-D1 have not the same sensor.

Due to the fact the the RD1 was the first digital rangefinder produced , + there is only one alternative currently (m8) and finally the low number of units produced and small used market, I doubt you will live long enough to see it reach that price level. 😀

When Athos6 get his R-D1 for 400dlls I will get my Leica M8 for 800... 🙂 maybe in year 2020? of course both will be outperformed by any cheap cell phone camera.

I use to have a D70, and I can assure you the M-mount in the R-D1 is worthy the 2000 dlls.

you'll have to wait awhile. meanwhile, enjoy that D70. with the money saved, pick up a nice 85/1.4, sell your nice M-mount lenses you no longer need to me (cheaply if possible), and we'll both be happier for it 🙂

We have an *istDL2 and with the FA 50/1.4 the image quality was much better than the one from the R-D1 with the 50 M-Hex.
One of the reasons I sent the R-D1 back. Personally, I also think the R-D1 is much overpriced.

Best regards,
Uwe

I had a 5D with some nice lenses but they never got much use out of me (except weddings, concerts, church events). The RD-1s I carry everywhere with a CV 40/1.4 (60mm equivalent) and a 15mm Heliar (23mm equivalent) and I take a lot more daily shots. Can't really compare an SLR with a Rangefinder. If you like one then use one. Tools are just tools, use them to take nice images.

I have a friend who takes his Nikon D3 with the 24-70mm lens everywhere with him. And he's just fine with it. I couldn't do that with my 5D and 24-70, it was WAY too big for me. He mentions that he loves the images of my RD-1s and is always trying to "borrow" it when we hang out together. But he says that it is WAY overpriced for him to get one. I told him that the D3 was WAY overpriced for me to get one =). Neither of us make our primary living from photography, at least, not enough to quit our day job =)

Just use what you like and don't try to understand other people, just enjoy what you enjoy ^_^/

But yeah, I bought a used RD-1s and been abusing it just fine with no problems. It also helps that there's a nice camera shop that can fix the RD near me in Los Angeles if it ever needs some repair.

No if the R-D1 drops to $400 the M8 will then be about $250. 🙄 There may 'possibly' be a Panasonic (Ooop's Leica) M12 cellphone at $8,000, but unfortunately no R-D2.

In the end a camera is worth what people are willing to pay for it. Judging from this forum I'd say several people feel the R-D1 is a good buy.

Like xtian noted, many find the R-D1s to be a better every day camera. I'm among them. While it's no D2 or D3, the R-D1s is perfect for taking with me at most times. By contrast my D70 spent much of its life in the bag near my desk while I carried my Leica D-Lux 3. Now I have another tool in my chest of camera options and am quite pleased with it.

Finally, I like the fact that the R-D1 is stripped down and lacks all the Kung Fu bells and whistles of DSLR cousins. The R-D1 is like trying to ride a bicycle, the D3 is like trying to fly a F16. I guess some just like simplicity.

I agree with some of the above statements; the only one who can claim if a camera is under/well or over-priced is their owner. My D80, Digilux2 and R-D1 are all perfect for what I use them, each one offers something different and they pretty much cover all my photographic needs. Maybe for my 40th birthday (in year and a half) I will treat myself with a black Leica M8, is it worthy? I will let you know. 🙂

Agree, I also have a Lumix L1 and D50 but never used them again since I own the RD1. I turned 35 two weeks ago, and went through the same thought process about the M8 😀. But they say, turning 40 is more difficult for a men, so I guess you won't resist ...

Yanidel, I know... 40 deserves a nice treat! the good thing for you is that in 5 you will have far better options than we have these days 🙂 If you want to part from the L1 let me know ok? I have an L1 body but sold the lens... I think is a better deal to buy the whole kit!

Regards,
R
