Erwin Puts on the Monochrom

a most interesting start of a major test. i admire Erwin Puts. A few feathers bound to be ruffled! Two major things to know, how the Monochrom compares to film, not only the M9 or one of the DSLR, Nikon and Canon!
Unlike a few other reviews of hundreds of lines per millimeter, we see here low numbers, but more than sufficient! Knew it when one read EP sold his M9. The M10 not far behind?

I'll read that when I've run out of socks to darn! :D

I like Puts though ... he's thorough and quite straight forward.

Huh, never realized that it IS considered a seperate entity from the M9.

It sure is. It's not the M9M or M9 Monochrom. It's the M Monochrom and vastly superior in noise performance and also has a resolution advantage that os very noticeable at high ISO because it retains so much information thats lost in noise on the M9.

The Monochrom is not a B+W M9. In terms of image quality, it supersedes the M9, color excluded of course.

Maybe. But I doubt the image quality is so sufficiently superior as to make it worthwhile to shell out another $7,000. And the M9 allows me the option of shooting in color AND B&W (with a little processing, of course....)

Paul,

Shooting color does not interest me. I'm an old B&W analog guy. M9M is the camera for me. I skipped the M9 and saved $7K. For me the IQ is superior, but I also understand in your case a M9 is better for you.

Ha!

Ha!

Puts:
First reviews of the prototype camera note that the main argument in favor of the Monochrom is a psychological one: loosing the ability to shoot in color forces the photographer into a discipline that visualizing and and shooting in black and white provides. If this argument were correct one would see a digital version of the Zone System soon.

I believe I posted my take with the same observation over a month ago on this site, only to be *** pooed and accused of not understanding digital cameras.

I've been reading Puts for over twelve years now and find his writing spot on. What I like is how he doesn't dabble subjectiveness on reviews. Like Keith mentioned, he is to the point and thorough. I commend that, especially given all the superfluous reviewers on the web.
