I went to an excellent camera store in Milan (where I live) today, Foto Ottica Cavour. The store is very cool. It has an amazing selection of Leica cameras and lenses, as well as many other rangefinder cameras. It was nice to see cameras that I've only seen in books and on the internet. I wish I had had lots of money with me.

On that note, I brought a friend with me to help stop me from spending any money. She was not helpful in this way at all. However, I can't blame her. Where I went wrong was by arriving during the store's lunch break: we went to a coffee shop down the street to wait for them to reopen. Drinking an espresso gives me such a jolt that I tend to lose my sense of judgement for about an hour afterwards. Not a good mind frame to be in when visiting Foto Ottica Cavour.

So without much thought, I bought an old Leica Elmar 9cm f/4 ltm lens. In my defense, it was only 150 euros ($200); one of the most inexpensive things I could have bought in the store. Further in my defense, I had been looking for a 90mm leica-thread-mount lens for my Canon P. However, after I got home a few hours later and attached it to my Canon P, I felt like it was a mistake buying it. It does not look like it belongs on a Canon P. It fits on the camera just fine, but it looks like an old brass drawer handle with black paint rubbing off. The Canon P is so nice looking and that old lens looks silly on it--especially compared to how nice it looks with the Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 I already own (see photo below).

Style concerns aside, I'm also questioning how good of a lens it can be compared to a new Voigtlander 90mm f/3.5 Lanthar. This Leica looks like it has two lenses at the end of a tube and the Voigtlander has a bunch designed to deal with all kinds of lighting problems. I realize that I don't know what I'm talking about, but I suspect that a new Voigtlander is better made than this Leitz lens--Voigtlander has the advantage of a few more decades of lens engineering.

So, I'm thinking that I should have spent an extra 100 euros and ordered a new Voigtlander. What do y'all think? Was it a mistake? Should I sell the Leitz lens on e-bay to recover some of my money and buy that Voigtlander? Or maybe I should have another espresso and hopefully forget about it by the time I come out of the caffeine high.

Shoot with it and find out if you like it! Worst case scenerio you don't and you can probably sell it for most or all of what you paid. Just don't drink TOO much espresso before you shoot with it as you might get some shakey, out of focus images!

pagpow,

They're in Milan, not too far from the Montenapoleone metro stop. For those who don't know Milan, Montenapoleone is the equivalent of Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive in Milan--which should have been my first indication I was heading for trouble as I walked there. Here's their web site: http://www.fotootticacavour.it The fellow RFF member, Stravinsky told me about them.

Their prices seem only a little higher than ebay prices. However, it was nice being able to handle the merchandise before buying, and not having to deal with a week of watching ebay bidding and then waiting another week to get the goods.

Are you near Milan, pagpow? Let me know if you decide to go to the store. I'm an idiot: I'm ready to go back again. I'll go with you. I know a nice coffee shop nearby. We can have an espresso before going. It'll be fun.

At least you are right - it doesn't look good on your canon. But why bother? At least you know, that you are in touch with some female aspects of your male personality - my women buy clothing every other week that they don't like anymore when they put them on, once they are at home. Another good thing: usualy camera gear sells better .......

I used to have a very old one of those, a 1936 Elmar, whose aperture ring turned differently from other Leica lenses and even had a different set of dimensions for the f-stops (the only familiar one was f4).

After my experience, I know how that lens looks on a more modern camera: dorky.

However, mine captured a shot I really like. It did it with flair... and flare.

If you have a chance to return the lens, by all means, do it... but not without burning at least one roll of film through your Canon, using that lens. Of course, have it developed too, if it's possible in an hour. Sure, that lens can be fun to use, but elegant it is not.

Look at the photographs and then decide.

In my case, I chose to sell it and, to be quite honest, I don't regret it. Must admit, however, that I was not under the influence of caffeine when I bought it. 🙂

Russell, the Elmar looks a little, uh, homely on the P. But you know, most lenses of that type look weird. I have a Canon 85mm f2, and it looks goofy on the P, or the Canon 7, or Leica IIIf. It's a decent lens, but you won't win points for style when using it.

Just wait and see how it performs. At least it's fairly compact and light.

I am not much for long lenses but I love my Canon 100f3.5 lens-it will be ideal for your Canon P as it is for mine. I also have thing for design and it not only performs very well but looks, to my eyes, "right" on my Canon P (as well as on my other Canon rangefinder cameras). Worth a try, and you'll have little trouble selling the Leica "espresso 90" you just purchased.

FrankHarries,

You're also welcome to come to Milan and have an espresso with me before visiting our local Leica store. Just come on a different day than pagpow and on a different payday so I will be ready to make another hasty purchase. Sounds good? Let's do it!!

Well, Russell - you bet that I've set a bookmark and will get in touch if I come to Milan. And I think I have to leave my credit cards at home - it could be that my wife doesn't agree when I decide to drink too many espressi.😀 well - as long as I remember my pin for my EC card.....

Thanks, Russell, I'm in San Francisco -- just a bit outside the third ring of Milan -- but I get by Milan every once in a while. I usually stop by New Old Camera www.newoldcamera.com, at 12 via Dante, for the same reasons you stop by Foto Ottica Cavour, to see some pieces live. Never knew about Foto Ottica Cavour, tho i'm often in that area; thanks for the website.

Next time i'm in Milan with a bit of time and freedom, I'll drop you a note. Thanks for the invitation.

Center Wash Out

Per the recommendation of a few people here, I shot a roll of film yesterday with my new (old) lens. The results are absurdly disappointing. The photos are overexposed in the center (see the photos below). Any ideas what caused this? Is there anything I can do to solve this problem? I'm thinking that I may have cause for a refund, but want to know if it's a user problem or a user resolvable problem before I go to the store and test my Italian language skills.
