Well I just got back from the latest estate sale. After working 65 hrs this week I was rewarded with a like new condition Leica 2.8/35 lens for a $35. I have been wanting to get a Leica M camera and now I am apparently on the way. Here's the question for you experts, does this lens also mount on LTM cameras? Is the M mount an adapter or is it permanently affixed to the lens? I would not mind using this on a Canon 7 I have just to try the lens. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The Summaron ($35, you lucky dog) was made in both LTM and M. You can buy an adaptor to use LTM lenses on an M body, but no the other way around. It should be very apparent (damn, $35?) if the bayonet on your lens is an adaptor. Try to unscrew it but don't get nuts, if it doesn't come off you will be forced to find a $50 M2 to mount it on. ($35, really?)

Yes 35 bones for a Summaron and not a mark on it. Looks better than what I found on *bay. The mount has a plastic red dot and a 1-2mm set screw on the side. So you say there is a converter that can be used to turn a bayonet mount to screw mount? If so, would the lens couple to the rangefinder?

No no no, adaptor to turn a screw mount to bayonet M mount, not the other way around. Looks like you should pack her up and send her my way for some testing until you get an M body to mate with her. 😉

Wonderful find. There are lot of good user leicas out there and a few other user Mmount cameras you can look at (with built in meters!) for about the same or less.

My mother spent years going around to estate and garage sales, brought home pounds of silver, never a find like that, never.

Enjoy!

There's a Goodwill store near a restaurant that I go to, and I occasionally stop in hoping to find an interesting camera. I've seen hundreds of banged-up plastic pieces of junk, but never anything interesting. Now I find that the Twin Cities has an "elite" Goodwill store where all the other stores send their best stuff. It's a long way from where I live, and I'll never get there. Doesn't seeem fair, somehow.

Here in Geezerville there are estate sales daily, but when I get there it's usually just an ER case where a camera used to be. Congratulations on a great find

I keep going to estate sales put on by the same estate sale company. Here is what I have found:

Canon 7 with 2.0/35 - $35
Nikon FM with 85mm - $60
Nikon 35-105 zoom, brand new - $15
2 new condition Nikkomats with lenses
Delta Stereo camera - $15
Yachica Electro 35 - $35

This has been over a period of about 5 yrs and is quite fun. I have been fortunate. It's hard getting used to buying at "normal" prices. Today I asked if there was an accompanying camera to the Leica lens. There wasn't. When I found the Canon 7, someone PUT IT BACK on the shelf and bought the 50mm 0.95 lens for $5. I missed the 50mm lens. At least this equipment ended up with me and not someone who is just out to make a fast buck. It sure is fun using this stuff.

In the UK we have charity shops that can still be the source of occasional bargains despite the hordes of people looking for things to sell on *bay (something makes me quite uncomfortable about treasure hunters looking to make profit at the expense of a charity).

My best find - Leica Trinovid BCN binoculars in their case. A little battered but optics are great and far superior to my father's expensive Nikon bins (INMHO). Only £35. And I'll never sell them as the chances of me having £100s to spend of a new pair is unlikely. (I've also picked up other bits in the past inc. a brand new Armani suit!)

<off topic>People do seem to be sinking to new depths though - last week I caught a couple stopping outside the local charity shop and loading all the donated goods from the doorway into the boot of their car (whilst laughing about it). Stealing from charity - not sure you could get much lower...</off topic>

Thanks.

The 2.8/35 Summaron originally came in both a LTM (Leica Thread Mount) and M mount. You could tell the difference by the LTM lens focused only to 1m and the M mount to .7m - and of course the mount itself.

But that's where it could be interesting. The early 2.8 Summaron and Summicron for M-mount had a LTM under a built on adapter with a set screw holding it in place. Remove the set screw ( and some glue holding the adapter mount there, best done by a Leica Repair person ) and you have a duel mount lens. So if you have an earlier lens, you can tell by a small set screw on the bottom ( as it would be mounted) outside rim of the chrome M-mount.
