EuroMeet 2012 - Istanbul

Great stuff smbilgin.

I had the following from some mates in Istanbul:

"There was a concensus on some places. For asia side of the city people suggest a route starting from Kadiköy, then Üsküdar, then visit Kuzguncuk, Çengelköy and if there is enough time and energy of the people finish in Anadolu Hisari. For Europe side of the city people suggested to start from Zeyrek, then Fener - Balat, then Galata, then Tophane and then finish in Karaköy."

What do you think?

First of all, from Kadikoy to Anadolu Hisari is not a walking distance for me  Please use google maps or google earth. I agree that all the places you mentioned are must see but, in two days?? I really doubt that.

For Europe side; from Zeyrek to Karakoy would be a good choice but some of you prefered from Taksim to Sultanahmet as far as I remember.

I think you all need some research from the net before we decide the route. In my opinion 2 weeks wouldn't be enough to discover hole city but since you have only 2 days the best route must be decided to satisfy everybody. I suggest you guys to google "istanbul guide" first. There are a lot of good sites that you can find very useful information about the city. Then we can decide the most desired route. If you let me decide the route, you will need 1 month to walk in the streets :D

I know what you mean smbilgin, I'm sure we could spend until next spring exploring a small part of Istanbul.

I don't think we should plan a specific route with times for when we reach a certain place, otherwise it becomes a bit of a route march and there is a lot of waiting and burying those of us who could not carry on (it happened in London last year).

If we have some areas, the more the better, then this will be good for people who are there for extra days they have some ideas for places to explore. We'll then pick some for the weekend and see what happens, perhaps we go in a completely different direction, but we have something to loosely follow.

As for Googling 'istanbul guide' - never! The Istanbulers are the guides ;-)

Glad to be guides :) No problem.. Then we will offer as many as places, so you will choose and we will guide. Check out my portfolio and pick some places. (Ignore other cities and countries) (for now.. we can visit them later :))

Simon, let's hook up us early birds. Martin, it 'd be very nice to meet if you 're around before the weekend. Hope Nico and Andrew make it too, really looking forward to seeing everyone.
.

yeh yeh yeh! our appartment isn't far away from taksim either (about 1.5km walking distance, to the south-west, if google is to be trusted).

oh, are there any french folks coming? we could discuss politics, if they're still allowed in the country by then that is... :D

haha, that's not very far away but it's not where we're staying, no worries. :D if you click the link I posted to the appartment somewhere above you will see the approximate location on the little map on the left.

yes but I'm thoroughly apolitical and don't follow the news. And I hide behind my German passport abroad anyways.

Mmm... let's try that google 'Zürafa Sokak', images.... mmm... NSFW I tell ye!

That's not where Simon is according to his link. He seems to be actually right behind Ara cafe by the Galatasaray Lisesi. Way far away from that old "bankers & prostitute" neighborhood (If I have my historical memory right).

It's quite a good spot actually.

I have been recommended this apartment: http://www.butikotel.biz/index.html

It works out at 150TL / night (£58 / 64 Euros). It will take 4-5 people, so even with just four, it makes things nice and cheap (and it is quite central).

Does anyone want to share with me and Rob?

I booked an apartment near Taksim Square for Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. There are two free beds if anyone wants to kip over and chip in £15/night.

I have also started a Google Map for us to use: http://g.co/maps/vb85g

It is edittable by anyone, so please feel free to add anything you want there.

Ta ta,
kully

Anyone know how the airports are about film in Istanbul? I'm flying in for a 2 month trip and I'd like to bring a hundred or so rolls or with me. Hoping its not gonna be a total pain in the arse.
