EuroMeet 2012 - Istanbul

Oh I've been there Simon - I can't afford to spend 5-6 hours there again! Popped over to see some friends that live out there, yeah...he's a banker, and I could just about muster enough cash for a frothy coffee and a gratis biscuit:rolleyes:

Jump on the Luton flight on Friday our Simon - I can come and pick you up from somewhere if you like - there won't be any traffic at that time.

You're right - I think the flight lands at Stansted and we get a bus the rest of the way, it'll be fine though.

smbilgin

I spent a really nice weekend walking around Uskudar, Kadikoy and the areas in between and around. What do you think about doing this Eastern side on Saturday and the Western side on Sunday? or the other way around? i ask because it seemed quite different to me (and quite different to the tourist guide istanbul).

That would be perfect. I would prefer Saturday for western side because there are a lot of action on Saturday since the most of people work on Saturday. On the other hand Bosphorus, Üsküdar and Kadıköy would be better if it is not so crowded.

Looks like we're getting a plan toghether smbilgin ;-)

Looks like (our) Simon has found digs for the weekend, I'm still up for sharing a flat &c.

Don't forget sloth - how many times have you said you'll come out to a meet? I ;-)
I always do Kully! :O :p

I just got bored of taking photos in London THAT'S ALL :D

@kully, what about dragging Tim (nimcod) along? He's used to babysitting me LOL.

Perhaps thats the answer for Sara too, a readymade load of housemates to travel through the city with. Though I don't know Sara so she may be winding us up a bit:p:D
No honestly, I am really such a baby when it comes to these things :p

I just need to tag along with some people, I don't like the idea of being stranded/lost

I hope I can join you guys on those dates...Can I get one of yours phone number just if I come there unplanned to catch you guys up?

Thank you, Simon. I certainly would love to meet you too in person.
I am planning a third one-month trip to Cairo for May of this year, and traveling outside May is difficult for me because of my work schedule at the university. August is a month during which overseas travel is possible each year, but not April. I hope that the security situation in Cairo will be good in may.

We will have the first ever Pensacola RFF Meeting on April 28/29 this year, so I will have to settle for it! If there are RFF members in the USA who cannot travel to Istanbul but manage a trip to sunny Florida, maybe some of them could plan to join us here in Pensacola.

Istanbul is on the Top list for my family as our next overseas trip. We have been watching Turkish soap operas since a couple of years, and the daily lives of simple Turkish people (not the fake rich characters in TV) remind us of good old times with family back home. Drinking tea or coffee seems always to be a good thing to do at any time of the day, and eating Kabab and lots of fresh vegetables make each dinner look just wonderful on TV. I would focus on the lower income parts of Istanbul, and try to meet with ordinary people in villages around the city. Quite often, paying a taxi driver for the day to take you to such areas could be arranged. Maybe a Turkish RFF member can help out in the logistics.

Hi Raid, have the soap operas really reached to US? I believe you talk about egypt, right? It would be really nice if you could come.

Still trying to make it possible in my projects. Do you already have an idea which area for an accomdation will be best regarding time to reach our meeting points?

I won't be able to make this one - last year's was great though. A wonderful group of people - I highly recommend going if you can.

so we just booked our flights:
10 april (the tuesday) we arrive at 5:30 in the morning (whaaaaaaa'?),
and we're flying out again the next tuesday, 17 april, sometime in the evening. anyone else around for the whole week?

I know Alkis and Des will be there from the 11th Simon.

Did you find anything accomodation wise?
