Anyone know how the airports are about film in Istanbul? I'm flying in for a 2 month trip and I'd like to bring a hundred or so rolls or with me. Hoping its not gonna be a total pain in the arse.
Just go ahead through the exit of the arrival hall, nobody is going to check you.

So I really only need to worry about my entry through lax then? Great news!

Hopefully your flight is a direct one from LAX to Istanbul; otherwise you will definitely pass through inspection at the transfer airport. Sometimes they do not indulge manual inspection in EU airports..

There IS a layover in Frankfurt, although not one long enough to warrant leaving the secured area of the airport. I was under the impression that one generally doesn't need to go through a second screening in this type of situation.

You go... Frankfurt or anywhere else in EU while your check-in baggage will transfer directly. Assuming your films will be packed in your handbag or rucksack, they will point to you directly the X-ray inspection (especially in Frankfurt) due to the dozens waiting on the lines... They generally have no time for hand-inspection.

Well crap. This whole deal is making me a little nervous. How does one deal with this issue then? Should I try and ship the film prior to the trip? Buying it over there doesn't seem like an option as I'm operating on a pretty tight budget.

I don't understand, {why, with what} are you worried?

Are you bringing with ISO 1600 film to concern about transit x-ray inspection??? They are safe for anything of lower speed. BTW, the non-commercial parcels sent by post or courier pass through much stronger x-ray inspection, similar to those used for check-in luggage. Pack your films into your hand bag/rucksack and pass through any transfer inspection with no worries. I do it several times a year with ISO 400 films usually.

Some of the trips I make have my film (out and back) going through carry on X-ray 12 times, and that includes Delta 3200/120 and I've never had any problems. In fact I used to throw any film I hadn't exposed back in the refrigerator and most likely it went out again for another 6 - 12 times X-ray. I've now started to keep track of what went out for use locally, so not to push my luck.

In Istanbul airport, you will go through 2 to 3 X-rays.
Have your film in ziploc bags and you should be fine. They are pretty easy about hand inspection and have never given me a bad look in the last few years.
At the sametime, i have taken trix about 8 times thru xrays and have not seen noticeable fogging.
Taksim is easy to get to. both light rail or on foot. or about 15-20TL cab ride from any ferry, bus, train terminal and even cheaper on the metro!

Hallo Euromeet crew . . . the last (only) meet I went to was Barcelona, but I have made time off from about 12th to 17th (Thursday to Tuesday) for this year. Well done Kully for, again, getting the ball rolling
So, regarding accomodation, does anyone have an apartment bed they would like filled, or are looking for someone with whom to rent somewhere? I speak English, French(-ish) and Dutch(-sort of) and rarely come home drunk at 04:00 in the morning.
My preparation, so far, has consisted of looking through Ara Guler's 'Istanbul' - but there will be more Googling and reading before April I'm sure.

Hi Kully, if the space hasn't gone in the last 24hrs I'll be happy to take up one of those beds for the nights of 13th to 16th inclusive.
The nights before and after I'll find a b&b.
Now I'm trying to use Google maps to figure out where Mr.Guler was when he made some particular photos....

Finally I managed to join the Istanbul meeting. It will be my second time in Istanbul, one of the most interesting cities I have ever been.

Professional assignment, I suppose. I reside in Istanbul and would like to see your pictures afterwards.
