Dear Martin,
Well, of course I'd back Arles,which is probably also the cheapest place to stay on the list. Drawbacks to such of the others as I have visited:
Riga: Didn't go through the centre but the outskirts were dull (true of most cities in all fairness). More to the point I found Latvia in general surprisingly expensive and dull. Good beer, though.
Lisbon: beautiful, especially Alfama, fairly expensive for half-decent hotels.
Malta: utterly stunning (see http://www.rogerandfrances.com/subscription/pst malta.html ) but quite hard to get to. Of course there are plenty of flights but not everyone wants to fly (or lives that near an airport). Also quite expensive unless you can book a package.
St. Petersburg: again, beautiful, but a lot of hassle with visas as compared with the EU.

I like that Valletta, Malta suggestion a lot actually. Hostelworld.com suggests private rooms available from €15, so it doesn't have to be very expensive if you choose basic accomodation.

Thank you - I'm interested. Gdańsk is a great idea - as well as one of the other beautiful cities in Poland (Wrocław, Kraków, ...). Could Ankara be an option? Bratislava/Vienna/Budapest and Verona/Venice would be most easy to reach for me though. 10./11.05. and 17./18.05. are my preferred weekends. 24./25.05. is definately not possible for me.

Those places are only a "stone's throw" from Europe, so why not? The year before last the Euromeet was held in Istanbul, and despite being the only Euromeet not held in Europe proper, I suspect that particular Euromeet had the highest number of attendees of any Euromeet held so far.

Why wouldn't europeans meet on some common backyard grounds just outside their doorsteps? Northern Africa is covered by most budget airlines on top of that, and a fun change of the regular flintstones background loop to make urban photography a little more interesting. Yet, still close enough to make a great destination for a european meetup I'd say.

FWIW, I'd prefer somewhere like Koln because it's on the rail network and easy for us in the UK or Ireland. Plus all the aggro of flying gets me down: or rather all the aggro before you actually and then after flying.
