When no matter how hard you try, you still screw everything up, even when you know better.
I was drinking my morning coffee and my sister came over to tell she had a purple iris blooming in her yard. Knowing my liking for shooting flowers she urged me to get it quick as this is highly unusual, this time of year.
I have been wanting to test the macro capability of my Mamiya C330 TLR. This camera is unique with the bellows and interchangeable lenses. I put on the 105 mm to give me some working room and loaded with Fuji Reala 100.First clue
Since it does not have a built in meter I got my old Norwood Director meter. Second clue.
50 yr old eyes and a 50 yr old meter do not work well together. I made sure I set the ISO to 80 as that is what I expose it at. I took the reading not expecting much and was surprised when it read f11@1/250 So I bumped to f16@1/125 for more DOF. Now this is 8am on an overcast morning. Third clue
I set the camera and proceeded to burn a 12 shot roll. Thinking these would really be some good shots with the detail of nedium format in macro mode. I was right proud. Fourth clue.
I went in and got my old folding camera and it was loaded with 400 speed.
Fifth clue.
Out in the open yard was an old bell and it was begging for a B&W
I metered and come up with f16@1/125. The old sunny 16 rule kicked in and I never even caught the metering problem till to late. Remember this was now set for 400 speed. Sixth clue.
I shot and then went inside and it hit me. I had misread the first reading. It was 1/25 instead of 1/250. DOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH :bang:
I pick up the Canon F1 and put on my 50mm and 2x Macro converter and load with reala again. Seventh clue
I proceed to shoot about 6 macro shots of the Iris. I had a location shoot for some engagement photos. I was going to use one of my A1's so I had to reset from 400 ISO to 100 for the Fuji Pro 160S. eighth clue
It hit me. I had not reset the F1 from 400 to 100, for the macro shots, and the nice fast shutter speeds never even set the old gears to turning. I guess it is old age to early and not enough coffee.
Now, normally I would not think much of this and would never tell anyone about it, however I have noticed a pattern of such stuff. Like stopping in a door and can not remember if I am going in or out, or picking up the phone and can't remember if I am calling or answering.
I have no idea what could be causing this. 😕 Anyone have a CLUE 😀

Maybe you shouldn't put that shot of whiskey in the morning coffee? 😀

This happens to the best of us though. I utterly and completely messed up my meter readings on my first roll on my R2A AND my 4x5, making that excited feeling of using a new camera turn quickly to frustration and sub-par results. Such is life! Gotta take the lessons and turn yourself into a better photographer for it.

I don't know about old age, but just last weekend I was shooting in Santa Cruz. I had the Canon F-1 loaded with Reala and the Bessa R with HP5. I was so confused, I forgot which one was 100 and which was 400. I don't know if any of the shots of the stormy ocean will come out, but I got if figured out by that night, and got some great shots of the new moon over the Santa Cruz boardwalk!!!

Hang in there, and I don't think you should feel too bad.

An old buddy of mine (honest) shot a whole roll of Neopan and forgot to turn the rewind lever before trying to use the rewind crank on a new M7. This was during the first snow of 2005. Film tore and I spent a few minutes with a swiss army knife removing the now duff film from the take up spool so he'd be ready for a new film.

So I gave him a roll of Velvia (colour slide) the second film ever to pass through said M7 to shoot. About an hour or so later I heared the shriek accompanied with a few expletives, he'd forgotten to remove the yellow filter applied to increase the contrast for the Neopan. Whatch out where the huskies go and don't you eat that Sweet yellow snow. 🙂

This was just before I got an RF, the lugging the weight of MF gear talked me into it.

Makes me feel good to know I've got at least 30 years before the effects of old age kick in... 😀
