I was one of these 'kids' back in the day. I was given a Pentax SP with a 50, f/1.8. Used the camera for 5 years, returned it with a CLA, new seals and a few prints.
I've never been more appreciative for anything else in my life. I ended up buying the camera from my friend and gifting it to a nephew interested in photography. Hopefully it inspires the same in him as it did in me.

On labor day last year, my extended family had a get-together/outing in downtown Dallas - I carried my Bessa, but I loaned a N75 with cheapo film, plus a couple of digital p&s's to my older nieces and nephews - I was pleased, and a little surprised at how many decent shots they got!
I can't imagine borrowing something for years... if you like it enough to use it that long, wouldn't you just buy your own?

Sam asked, "Can I shoot that camera that sounds like a gun?" I knew he meant the F5:
It tends to get a little heavy for them though:
Sorry Chippy, I guess nobody ever lent you a camera, huh?

When my daughter was taking a photography class last semester, one day her teacher told her to go get the camera off his desk to take to the basketball game on the weekend. It wasn't the ususal school issue manual SLR, but a Canon digital SLR with a zoom lens. I beleive it was his personal camera. It made me feel good that he trusted her that much. She got some good shots and he said one of them would be used in the yearbook.

Yes, my son likes to `borrow' stuff all the time, so we get lots of fluffy animal and nostril photos also. Some of his friends are now showing some interest.
What i really like about their attitude is the fact that you never hear - FILM OR DIGITAL

Gave my boy a Hexar... Seems to be the reason stuff seems to disappear from the cold cabinet in the freezer!
