Excellent Nikon Coolscan service in 2017... Yes!

Just have to write a little bit about Nikon Coolscan service on ebay.
Last Sunday I requested some info on getting a V ed repaired.
Frank Phillips wrote me back immediately answering my questions.
This is a scanner I sold a couple years ago and the USPS broke during shipping... it's been sitting in a box since.
It was insured but the USPS refused to pay for damages.


I shipped the scanner last Monday and received it back on Saturday. That's 6 days including shipping time.

The carriage guide was broken likely from a "drop shock".
He has 3D printed duplicate replacement parts and was able to fix it.
The machine has been repaired, cleaned, and calibrated all for $160 including shipping both ways!!

This is great service and definitely calls for some props here where we covet these scanners so much!

I tested the scanner today and it seems as sharp as ever.
Having everything clean does seem to make a big difference.

Yep. Frank did a great job on my scanner, too. Received it from the seller on eBay on Wednesday with some UPS "love bumps", emailed Frank, dropped it with him on Thursday at 4:00pm. Received an email from him at 4:00am Friday that it was fixed. Picked it up from him on Friday evening at 6:00pm. Didn't have the cables I needed, so I had to wait on that and a MF holder, but received that today and ran some scans this evening. Wow. Frank did great work. This is a great machine. Man does good work and he does it fast. Frank does this full time for retirement income. If you need something fixed, he's the man to use. Just saying.

Thanks for the HU on this!! My ED4000 might need a proper cleaning and replacement of the mirror, the SA30 needs new IR sensors for film transport control (I got those parts from the auction site but soldering SMD requires strict temperature control and practice)

Key here: Frank's no more of a youngster than some of the rest of us. If you think you might need it "one day", make it sooner rather than later. Check with him first on what you need. He buys lots of old scanners for parts; he sells rebuilds; etc. He's a one man Nikon Coolscan kind of a dude. Good work, too. Frank will remind you... "Double box before you ship". Good to remember!

Let me add that Frank is also a pretty decent photographer, too. He had some awesome shots of Venice on his wall that were printed on Mitsubishi Paper Mills PictoricoPro paper that is really a film and produces a print that I'll be dogged if I can tell the difference between it and a wet print. Expensive paper, but if that's the look you want, worth adding to the arsenal.

He had some awesome shots of Venice on his wall that were printed on Mitsubishi Paper Mills PictoricoPro paper that is really a film and produces a print that I'll be dogged if I can tell the difference between it and a wet print. Expensive paper, but if that's the look you want, worth adding to the arsenal.

I think you’ll be happy Rick.
He revived my otherwise bricked CS50.

It seems sharper now than it was before.
The cleaning of internal optical surfaces alone might be worth the trip in to Frank.
One heads up..is boxes

I double boxed with a finish size of 18x12x8”.
The return box was aprx. 30x15x15 😱

My original double box was suspended inside of the big box.
These are more fragile than they seem!

Did you try one of the many part shops in Akihabara? They do not only sell electrocnic parts but also switches, cables and other electromechanical parts. I found a spare relay for my darkroom timer there, that was of the simimilar type as the original one that needed to be replaced.

Thanks will give it a try. I did find a website with the actual part numbers etc, so maybe I'll get lucky. However, given my past ham-fisted electrical efforts I am a little terrified of breaking it even further.
